I can see your reasons for getting the goalie -- your farm is stacked and your team isn't exactly struggling with those keepers. Getting a stud goalie prospect for the farm is a smart plan.

I do wonder if you're paying a lot to get him though. Could be a win-win deal (good for both -- I'm sure if the other guy posted here, it'd look good on his end too. Maybe better). The only question is whether or not you should be paying less (Grigorenko) or getting more (push for pick/pick upgrade as well).

I agree...Lehner may not see action until after next season if Anderson sticks around...I'd try to use Grigs or even Gallagher or as Stone says push for added value

If its straight up, I'd take the Galchenyuk side

I think I'd go with Galchenyuk. Lots of upside there.

it is a bit more than i would hope to pay however you are in a 14 team league goaltending is not cheap in the least in a league that size

i would try to get a pick back or something but at the end of the day if this is the only deal for you you might have to take it

my question though would be how long can you consider lehner a prospect before you will be required to use a keeper spot on him

I'd trade a quality prospect skater with upside for a quality goalie with upside any day. Its hard to find a quality goalie with Lehners future then it is to find quality forwards like Galchenyuk. Im not saying Galchenyuk wont be an excellent NHL player, but those are a lot easier to replace then a goalie with Lehners pedigree and future.

I agree with Axeman on this one but , you may pay less durring the off season when Lehner isn't in the limelight.
If you can't wait I'd make the deal.
Lehner should be the next starter for the Sens but , it's not carved in stone that he'll be the #1 anytime soon. The Sens have snagged another sleeper goalie.Check the Dobber main page and read the ramblings + Bishop is no slouch either & then ther's Andersson.
Someone is likely to get moved as well. Can you imagine if they put any of those 3 on the trade block!
That said Galchenyuk will likely be a top 50 guy some day soon.

Axeman - its a question about timing...Lehner will not likely get consistent action for another year+ unless something startling happens like they trade Anderson & Bishop in the next 6 months whereas Galchenyuk is already getting consistent action and producing right now...

You are in great shape with your forwards. I would have made the same move your shoes. On top of the goalies you already have, getting a goalie with Lehner's pedigree combines with Ottawa' potential offensive fire power is scary. Good job!

and in a league this size in another year plus you will not be able to touch lehner for galchenyuk alone

    it is about timing

in leagues this size you cannot wait for high expectation goalies to actually become starters and then trade for them as the price goes up exponentially

Thank you for adding and the clarity to my post.

I dont know how your league works, but in all of my leagues, goalies hold a ton of value compared to skaters. You cant trade a starting goalie for a skater straight up for the most part (theres the odd exception but its pretty rare). This is the point I was trying to make. If you have the chance to trade a quality young skater for a quality young goalie straight up, especially a goalie who is pencilled to be the future of a franchise, I'd do it. its easier to replace the quality young skater (probably will be able to do it in this years draft) then it is to wait for a young drafted goalie to come into his own and establish himself.

Once Lehner becomes the starter in Ottawa, would you be willing to trade him straight up for Galchenyuk? I know I wouldnt just because its harder to replace a starting goalie.

As lucifer316 stated, if you wait for him to become a starter, good luck getting him straight up for a skater. Now is the time before his price climbs exponentially.
