Points only I would take Backstrom.
Pts only. 1G = 1A = 1pt
Does Backstrom will come back in the 80-100 pts range ?
Will Neal keep putting 80 + pts with Crosby in ?
Thanks

Backstrom easily for me.
Even if I factor in Backstrom's concussion issues, I would still choose him.

I wrote about Neal a couple of weeks ago if you missed my column...
The thing is Neal really benefitted from the absence of Crosby, he got prime time alongside Malkin, plenty of touches and plenty of SOG. With Crosby back on the team, he just occupies so much of the Pens offense that surely Neal will be relegated to more of a support role. It's a simple numbers game...
With Backstrom the biggest key is how much will the Caps offense change under Oates? If he goes back to the run and gun style, then Backstrom will have a huge year. If they continue to play "two-way" hockey, then Backstrom might have an "okay" year. If he gets hurt again, then you're stuffed...
But I agree with the rest of the Dobberities, that Backstrom has much higher upside than Neal and would easily take him over Neal in a points only.

another vote for Backstrom
This guy is amazing and will always put up some points !
He was over a point per game last year even if Ovechkin was so so.
and Mike Ribeiro is a PP spe******t should be on the 1st PP unit so i'm confident Backstrom will be back to form.
Neal should not be far behind but if both stay healthy I dont think he can fallow Backstrom. !!!

I would also vote for Backstrom but I do feel that Neal can get close to last year's numbers. Gotlaid makes sense saying that most of the year he was without Crosby so had more opportunities. However, although it is a smaller sample size, here's his production when Crosby returned:
Neal: 16 points in 12 games (including 55 SOG)
This rate was actually better than the rate of production for the rest of the season (65 points in 68 games). Of course this is a simplified view and could be other factors but I don't see any reason why he can't get 75+ points again next season and beyond.
That being said, I choose Backstrom given his productive history and still had a PPG+ season with injury and a poor season from Ovechkin last year. I see 80 points regularly at a minimum going forward - 90+ is realistic if the offense ramps back up.
This is a nice matchup. For a full season I think Neal will match what he points total from last year. Backstrom on the other hand should score around 90+ points in a full healthy season. They are both great picks, I just think Backstrom has the ability for a little bit more than Neal.

Not really necessary to pile on at this point, in points-only you want Backstrom by a considerable margin. Unless of course, you are very shallow at Wing and deep at Center.
Even in that case, it's probably better to keep Backstrom and pursue a trade.
For the record, I am a massive Penguins fan and I was touting James Neal as soon as Shero acquired the guy. He is one of my favorite NHL players, but Backstrom is the far superior option.

You should look at it this way.
Backstrom by himself is an 80+ point talent.
Neal requires Malkin or Crosby beside him to be an 80 point talent.
Which one would you hedge your bets on? I think all of the above posts make that obvious.
