    Within 48hrs. There was an arbitration case yesterday, so we should know the ruling 24hrs after that.

    My guess...sub $3.5m. Leafs have a stronger case than Samsonov does. Maybe like $3.2m.

    Samsonov can only use Vanecek and Georgiev as comparables. He’ll get right in the middle…one year and within .02 of $3.75.

    Leafs should've just have been done with it and given him like a 3-4 yr deal worth around $3.8-4M. All this posturing and he might be gone after 1 year. I know it's all part of the CBA but nickel and diming Sammy definitely leaves a bad taste in his mouth. At least I would think.

    Totally, I don’t get this, especially as Sammy did well in his first season and is still so young, and it’s not like there are tons of options after him.

    Possibilities of why this went to arbitration:

    A. Negotiations didn't go well, were forced into arbitration aka unclear who is at fault
    B. Team wants to keep cap space open for 2024-2025 onwards as much as possible because of expected contract extensions to core forwards, so force Samsonov to take 1 year deal at 4.5 or less
    C. They don't really believe in Samsonov
    D. They believe in Woll to be their starter or at worst tandem goalie in two seasons

    ...or a combination of some/all of the above. If I had to guess it's about ensuring the cap space is open for Matthews and Nylander, and even if not Nylander then Marner the year after will need to be budgeted for, despite the cap going up.

    They're hoping the winner of the 50/50 draw will be the next Adin Hill for the league minimum. It's all about managing the cap.

    So a cap compliant Leafs roster is possible without a trade with a bit of cap space (ignore the lines really though):
    Bertuzzi (5.5m) - AM (11.640250) - Marner (10.903)
    Knies (0.925) - JT (11) - Nylander (6.962366)
    Domi (3) - Kampf (2.4) - Reaves (1.35)
    Jarnkrok (2.1) - Gambrell (0.775) - Lafferty (1.15)
    Forwards = $57,705,616

    Rielly (7.5) - Brodie (5)
    McCabe (2) - Klingberg (4.15)
    Gio (0.8) - Lilegren (1.4)
    Defense = $20,850,000

    Samsonov (3.55), Woll (0.766667) = $4,316,667

    Total = $82,872,283 ($627,717 in space).

    Murray on LTIR (or Trade), Holmberg sent down, Timmins sent down. Leafs can have Holmberg in over Gambrell.

    If you are to buyout Murray, it's a cap penalty of $687,500. Which is just more than the above roster can do. I still feel like a trade is going to have to happen though, but I just don't know who.

    Timmins isn’t waiver exempt and would be claimed immediately. I don’t think they see that as an option.

    If they don't do a trade, someone will be placed on waivers and potentially lost. It'll be Timmins or Lafferty I'd think. And this is a reason why I think they make a trade over doing what's above, but it's at least an option if teams are going to play hard ball with the Leafs and their cap problem.

    I imagine a trade is already in place 'if needed'. I like to believe Treliving signed all those dudes knowing he will be cap compliant no matter what.
