Oh, sorry. I know how long the buyout window is open for after an arb case or arb settlement.

What I was asking was how many YEARS has the NHL had this condition in place for?
It seems like it is "strategy" now - to have at least one arbitration guy... just for the added bonus of enacting a later buyout.
I don't recall discussing this in past years.

Oh well, It's been around at least since Troy Brouwer got bought out in 2018 lol.

I looked through buyout history of the league, and I'm just guess the following are in the "2nd Window":
Vermette was bought out August 2nd, 2016
Brett Lebda was bought out August 10th, 2011
Colin White and Trent Hunter were bought out August 1st, 2011
Tim Kennedy and Donald Brashear were bought out August 2nd, 2010
Brendan Witt bought out August 1st, 2010

I'm thinking that the 3-day, then 48hr condition might be something only very recently.

Ya, I looked at the Lebda buyout, and the rules must have been different then.

Shea Weber had his arbitration hearing scheduled for Tuesday August 2nd, 2011. He signed a deal Thursday August 4th "following arbitration filing". He was put on unconditional waivers Saturday August 6th, then Lebda was bought out Wednesday August 10th, 2011, 6 days after Weber's arbitration.

Maybe the rule was you have to place them on waivers before, who knows. but the fact the waivers came 2days after Weber signing his deal seems like it was done on purpose. Then the buyout 4 days later ... who knows.

Because the team is seen by the player as acting like an a-hole and tearing them down. It makes perfect sense that this process ruins the relationship.

This is often true, and then you see the weird cases where the two sides are so close you want to dope slap them for filing, as the numbers are so close that you can slit the difference,

I’m hearing Ilya Samsonov and the #Leafs went ahead with the hearing. There is no more negotiating and an arbitrator will rule on his salary.

This isn't good for his long term future with the Leafs.

it is death. Very few players emerge from arbitration hearings with anything other than discomfort (bordering on hate) for the process and the team that made them go through it, especially here where there is a huge gap between them ($2.9 versus $4.9 sought by Sammy).

If I'm the Leafs, I'm looking at trading the kitchen sink for Hellybuyck.

Might as well send Samsonov with Nylander in some sort of package if you're bringing in Hellebuyck. Jets will need a goalie.

Their cap management is why they are having to go to arbitration with Samsonov. He’ll get a year and $3.75mil and be gone after the season.
