Well there's no way he's taking less than MacKinnon at $12.6M. I fully expect Matthews to get at least $13M, because you know, he wants to leave money on the table. And the Leafs will again not get a max term from him. 5yrs is all he will sign for again.

Ya, I can't remember exactly what the tone was when he sign his current contract, but it feels kind of the same with conflicting reports from the same reporter about leaving money on the table.

Matthews would be dumb to sign over 5yrs the way the cap should trend. He'll have made $60,970,000 by the time his deal is done. Add another 13x5 ($65m) minimum, and he'll have made $125,970,000 by he's 30yrs old. So anyone who says "oh he needs to sign 8yrs for security" isn't thinking that he's already got that security lol.

From his side, I totally get why he is signing the shorter term deals. I dont blame him. I am surprised more players don't go this route but they want that security, especially if you are middling to low end player. From the Leafs side of the house, you want him as long as you can so you dont have to keep going through this as often.

Samsonov (3.5m), Woll (0.766667) = 4,266,667

Total = $70,481,450 + Murray (4.6875) = $75,168,950
Space = $8,331,050.

So $8m to upgrade LW2, and 2D. Then even more space if they get out of the Murray deal.

Everything about Adin Hill I could ever find just said "2yr 4.9m" and nothing about if that was AAV or total.

If it's 4.9m aav, that would put Hill as the 19th highest paid goalie, but remove Lehner+Price as they didn't play so he would be the 17th highest paid goalie. So ya, I guess Samsonov would be the same tier of payday.

I would have liked this more had they traded down 10-15 spots - then nabbed him while adding an extra pick or two.

It also sounds like Cowan was the guy the scouting department wanted before Treliving was the GM. If Dubas had traded down in Pitts but Treliving didn't, I'd be more questionable on why Toronto didn't trade down. But it really seems like no one wanted to move anything at the draft.

Nylander and Leafs have a sizeable gap in contract demands. Sounds like Toronto was comfortable at 9m, maybe Nylander is looking for 10m

#LeafsForever GM Brad Treliving reportedly says he doesn’t plan to buyout a contract before tomorrow’s deadline, but notes there is another buyout window later in the off-season.

Here are the requirements for initiating a second buyout window. Matt Murray would be eligible.

So I guess this means Treliving is either going into the season with three goalies on his roster or he's confident he can find a dance partner willing to trade for Matt Murray. The option to simply waive Murray and send him to the minors is another option as well but that's a lot of wasted cap space.

Imagine if Treliving bought Murray out now, and couldn't get Samsonov signed? It would be a huge fumble. So I still see Murray as a buyout option. However, the larger buyout penalty yr is when the Leafs need cap for Nylander and Matthews so...I can see why they wouldn't buy him out and just kind of hope for an LTIR option.
