I agree I think Rielly gets calls and Toronto listens. Toronto does have some defensive depth where I don't think Rielly gets extended unless the price is right.

If Toronto moves Rielly, then they end up really not giving much of a choice to Seattle

Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Tavares, Kerfoot, Engvall, PlayerX (from Rielly move?)
    Muzzin, Brodie, Holl
    Campbell

This scenario would leave only UFA's and Hutch as options to be drafted from them.

Barring some trade or something Leafs options are:
Protect 4/4: This will leave Hyman exposed
Protect 7/3: This will leave Muzzin / Holl exposed

Holl is a right handed D which are in low supply. He will be the hardest to replace so I would least want to lose him.
Muzzin has been really good for them come playoff time. Hyman you also want what he brings. I don't think UFA is going to deter Seattle, they will have plenty of cap to offer juicy contract.

How much do you think Hyman will ask for???

    He'll ask for 6yrs, 5.5mill I think (33mill). Maybe he'll end up getting 5yrs, 4.8-5.5mill (24-27.5mill)

I have Hyman projected at $4.9M, so that all sounds about right.

toronto is a prime candidate to bribe seattle into taking someone like kerfoot/dermott if they also give up a draft pick to not pick holl. toronto gets the player they want and seattle gets more total value

But they can keep 4/4 and expose Kerfoot, Engvall and Dermott and not give up anything. I don't think there's much reason to bribe Seattle to not pick a player on the Leafs. I really like Kerfoot, but I'm not bribing a team to take him over Holl. I'll protect Holl and let Seattle choose between Hutch, Kerfoot, Dermott, or Engvall.

If they Leafs were planning on protecting Hyman they would have already signed him to an extension. They then would need to find 2 more forwards to protect. I can't see any way they don't go 4/4. Maybe they re-sign Hyman after the expansion draft, but they won't be protecting him.

yes, the advantages of 4/4 are clear so nothing crazy should happen but positional depth matters on the leafs. they may add like a 4th/5th so they pick kerfoot whose more replaceable than dermott for example.

they could also just soldier on as you suggested. kyle is the type of gm you know he has a good plan in place already

The amount of players they need to think of to keep is between Kerfoot, Engvall, and Dermott makes me know Dubas has had this planned for a long time.

I'm down for the thought of "pick Dermott over Kerfoot and we'll give you a 5th" or whatever pick. Dermott is their 5/6/7 D-man and I would be ok having him picked depending what contract he ends up signing.

It's kinda wild to me that people think the Leafs should protect 29 yo 4D Holl over 24 yo 4/5D Dermott, but if that's truly the case is losing Dermott all that big of a loss, with Sandin and Liljegren in the pipeline? As for Kerfoot, I don't reall think he's worth the $3.5M he's being paid for what he provides, with Robertson, Abramov, SDA, Hallander, and Amirov in the system. I don't think any of Holl/Dermott/Kerfoot//Engvall are worth an extra asset to protect.

Leafs window to win is now and Holl is better for that. Holl is a Right hand shot which is much harder to replace then Dermott left.

If Leafs leave Hyman unprotected then he's as good as gone imo.

Hyman is a UFA and as such can not be protected or unprotected - since he is not under contract in 21-22 he does meet exposure requirements and he is in complete control. He does not belong to any team. He can sign with whoever he likes once FA opens on July 28th. If he wanted to sign with the Kraken he could do so in their special UFA signing window 18-20 July. But Seattle can not "select" him unless he has agreed to sign there. Or he waits and signs on/after 28 July with the team he wants to sign with. Including Toronto.

He is eligible for selection and can be protected or not protected. All that eligibility is for is for meeting a certain criteria that teams must meet. Seattle can take Hyman if they choose to if left unprotected. Albeit they would have to get a deal done with him, but would have first dibs.

Seattle CAN NOT select him if he has not agreed to sign with them. That would be a really weird relationship between team and player where they "protect" a UFA. Either he intends to sign with his team or he intends to test free agency.

Seattle can sign a player in their early window and use that player as their selected player

AKA, Seattle signs Hyman and that's their selection in the expansion draft from toronto.
