I thought they wanted sandpaper. Or are they going to look to trade for/sign that?
I'm not understanding these picks by Dubas. Another undersized C now?
5'9" 165lbs Finish C Roni Hirvonen....

He said through FA or the trade market when he said that. Seems to be the forgotten part of the quote.
They tend to draft for high end offensive potential, and want to address the other part via trade.
I can't remember the exact scenario, but one draft they said that it's easier to find those sandpaper guys on the trade market than it is to find a scorer. That's they roadmap throughout the draft it seems. Find high offensive potential, use that to address offensive holes in the lineup via trade or using that player (Move Kap, bring up Robertson)

I'd be curious to what the timeline between Schneider and Rodion is. Toronto's window is very much set up to as 5-6yrs.
Maybe they think they a RHD won't be ready in time to be utilized as a part of their run. Or maybe they think Lilijgren can step up finally. That's a pretty solid d-core if they can get him to step up (Rielly, Muzzin, Sandin, Lili, Dermott as a 3rd line)
I'm spitballing, I would have preferred to see them take Schneider instead.

Keefe said Malhotra will run Leafs PP, and MacLean will help staff and players in all facets. But MacLean won't be traveling with the team...
Wonder why MacLean won't be behind the bench on the road...
As a side note, Agent Daniel Milstein now has a bunch of Leafs as clients. Barabanov, Korshkov, Mikheyev, Der-Arguchintsev, Armirov (15th), and Akhyamov (106th). And some former Leafs in Dzierkals, Soshnikov, Valiev, Korostelev, Marchenko, and Zaitsev

Via FA/trade this offseason, the Leafs have brought in/out:
IN:
Simmonds, Brodie, Boyd, Anderson, Bogosian, Vesey, Hallander, Rodrigues
OUT:
Kapanen, Johnsson, Barrie, Ceci, Gauthier, Clifford, Rodrigues
In average size:
6'0.875" (72.875") - 191.875lbs
Out average size:
6'0.875" (72.71429") - 200.1429lbs
Obviously Gauthier was not an affective 6'5" 235lbs man, same with Ceci (6'2" 210lbs) and Kapanen (6'1" 192lbs). But did the Leafs get bigger? Actually...no. Especially when you bring in Robertson (5'9" 168lbs) and Barabanov (5'10" 192lbs). But did they get tougher...I think so.

I see a lot more grit in the group coming in. All too often size doesn’t equate to grit and toughness. As long as the incoming grit players aren’t a defensive liability, the roster definitely improved.

You draft for skill. Best Player Available - Period.
You sign FA's to fill holes - sandpaper, RHD.
Drafting for sandpaper and for FO needs led to Biggs and Gauthier.
Drafting BPA has led to Sandin (not big) & Robertson (small).
You can trade skill for grit - See Durzi as an integral part of the Muzzin deal.

People need to separate draft from NHL roster. Outside of the top 5. No one should expect anything they draft to help the NHL roster for 2+ years. Drafting grit at #15 isn't a help now need. It would have been a missed opportunity. Cam had Rodion at #12. He looks like a legit player. Our first 3 picks were ranked in the top 30 in various draft ranking boards.
I think by now we should be trusting Dubas when making a draft pick. management of the NHL roster is something to continue to monitor.

Rossi and Lundel will help way ahead of Sanderson and probably Byfield and Rymond for that matter. But you are right you cant draft for NHL needs. Only handful of players make it their first year and not too many more in year two...after that NHL teams needs maybe completely different.
i loved the Amirov pick..he is doing well in KHL already.

10 GP...
6 Goals...
13 Points...
46 Sogs...
I cant see hig "grut" stats but he generally averages about a pim a game so Im guessing theyre not too shabby. Maybe Dubas really didnt need to run our and trade for a Dumba type :P
I think 5-7 of those points are PPP...I think that's what Steve Dangle said. But still, points are points.

Leafs sign Sabourin to an AHL deal because Dubas is kinda funny.
Sabourin was the Senator that Matthews chirped by trying to look at the name on the back of his jersey because he didn't know who he was.

Man, Dubas is playing the arbitration game correctly but filing 2x$1M for Mikheyev is borderline insulting lol.
