And we know the struggle of a KHL player who's intent is to go to the NHL. The KHL team certainly holds the grudge and holds back playing them.

Being in the Marlies isn't a curse for him either. Gets to learn a bit of NA life, and it's not like the Marlies facilities are terrible, it's practically an NHL facility. So he gets the NHL life without the pressure.

He's more sandpaper than Bracco... If he adjusts well and plays lights out, he could get a call up first.

Freidman is saying the Leafs decided on JT a few days ago for the captaincy. Makes sense. My guess is they wait to the roster is set and pre-season is done.

My guess is they were just waiting for a reason to not give it to Matthews... They fully intended on giving it to Tavares all along... but wanted to make it look like it was a tough decision as to not hurt Matthews' feelings.

Then when some negative publicity comes out in regards to Matthews, it was the perfect timing to give it to Tavares.

Maple Leafs Announce Roster Moves Ahead of Season Opener

The Toronto Maple Leafs announced a series of transactions today.


The following four players have been placed on waivers for the purpose of being reassigned to the Toronto Marlies (AHL): Kenny Agostino, Kevin Gravel, Nic Petan and Garrett Wilson.


Egor Korshkov has been assigned to the Toronto Marlies (AHL).


Kalle Kossila and Mason Marchment have been designated as injured, non-roster players.


Matt Read has been released from his Professional Tryout agreement and has signed a one-year AHL contract with the Toronto Marlies.

Leafs have kept 8D to start - Liljigren the one real surprise for me right now.
Thought he would be a final cut and go straight to the Marlies. Good camp for him.

Korkshov was easily the most pleasant surprise IMO. He'll be back before the season is done. He can play up and down this line up.
Sentimentally, would like to see Holl get a real chance to suit up and make a run at that 5-6 pair.

Oh ya captaincy means NOTHINNNGGG for the game. It's pure media and jersey sales. Bonus for the player who gets the C as I'm 90% sure they get a portion of their jersey sales every yr. So new jersey and something different means more bought by rich people.

"#83, Cody Ceci, #88 William Nylander, #94 Tyson Barrie". Crowd starts growing in noise, realizing who was skipped, "From Mississauga Ontario, And your new captain, #91, John Tavares!!"

If it's Morgan Rielly, they should before the game show a Captain Morgan's Rum commercial, have like the typical one where the Captain Morgan's Rum Captain is saying, "CAPTAIN" to all these different professions coming into the Maple Leafs Platinum Lounge, then Morgan Rielly walks in, and says "Um, Morgan..." and everyone goes "CAPTAIN".

As a prediction though. I think the 3rd and 4th line kindddaaa struggle on point production to start the yr. And the d's gonna have chemistry issues till roughly November. Lots of turnover on the roster, tough September schedule. Think the start of the year isn't going to be amazing, but still won't suck

Spezza scratched tonight, will play Friday (their next game). Want to give him more time to get up to speed on the PK apparently. Games vs Ottawa for the ex-longtime Sen who has lots of family there tonight likely. Don't quite get this move really, but better make winning 100% the target EVERY game. No, "oh it was a teaching moment having Sandin out to defend a 1goal league vs TBL". This is an odd move by Babcock really.
