It's a reason for some teams PTO's the last couple of years. Or why Richard Clune gets pre-season games when there's 0 chance he goes anywhere but the AHL for the rest of his career.

15.4 (c) of the NHL-NHLPA Collective Bargaining Agreement

A Club shall be permitted to dress a minimum of eight (8) veterans for any Exhibition Game. For purposes of this Section 15.4(c), a veteran shall constitute either: (1) a forward or defenseman who played in thirty (30) NHL Games during the previous season, (2) a goaltender who either dressed in fifty (50) or more NHL Games or played in thirty (30) or more NHL Games in the previous season, (3) a first round draft choice from the most recent year's Entry Draft, or (4) any Player who has played one-hundred (100) or more career NHL Games. The matter of Player participation in Exhibition Games shall be referred to the NHL/NHLPA Competition Committee for its consideration and recommendations, if any, in accordance with Article 22.

I assumed this move was coming today. He was already injured and had to be pulled from a preseason roster twice. With his injury history it’s no surprise they released him already.

Very curious to see if they just stick with Hutchinson or try to trade for a backup. What are the chances Kaskisuo ends up on the bench for opening night?

He's already on the NHL roster for the rest of the pre-season at the least

I think more attention needs to be given to Korshkov from last night.
buried in the KHL & marred by injuries, we've forgotten about pick #31 from 3 years ago.

2g - he looked good last night.

It's really just contract that's keeping him out of the NHL right now. If he signed a 1yr deal like Mikheyev, I'd say Korshkov would be in front of him. But since he signed a 3yr ELC (had to), and Mikheyev could just leave NA if he gets sent to the AHL makes it more of a Mikheyev owning that NHL roster spot.

Not from what I heard. They wanted him to get into the Montreal game, but he didn't feel physically fit enough to do so.

Given his injury history and seeming reluctance (or inability) to battle through what has been made out to be a minor ailment (it might be significant, but if it was, I don't think they would have talked about it the way they have), they needed someone who would at least be reliable, and it didn't look like he could be that guy. I think they wanted him to work out and gave him the opportunity, but he didn't seize it.

Babcock's quote on him pulling himself out of the game against Montreal was "he wasn't feeling up to it", I believe.

Oh geez. Didn't know that. For a backup goalie, you need to be ready to go whenever. So to start going "not feeling up to it" on a PTO is scary for a team.

Had he not suffered injuries and recieved 13+min/gm in the KHL I think he's on the team and the Leafs don't even pursue Mikheyev. In the end, we get both... I've held out hope/stayed optimistic Korshkov would become a real solid player... I'm stoked to see him with the Marlies this year.

And we know the struggle of a KHL player who's intent is to go to the NHL. The KHL team certainly holds the grudge and holds back playing them.

Being in the Marlies isn't a curse for him either. Gets to learn a bit of NA life, and it's not like the Marlies facilities are terrible, it's practically an NHL facility. So he gets the NHL life without the pressure.
