http://hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=4478On This Day in Hockey History - February 2nd

1928 - Senators' Alex Connell recorded the second of his NHL-record six consecutive shutouts, with a 1-0 win over the Montreal Maroons, in Ottawa. It was Connell's 43rd career shutout. Six consecutive shutouts would be fantasy gold!

1964 - Detroit's Gordie Howe recorded his 700th NHL career assist during a 2-2 tie against Toronto in Detroit.

1989 - Penguins defeated the Flyers 5-3, to end their 42 game winless streak (0-39-3) in Philadelphia. The winless streak had begun in January 1974.

1990 - Mario Lemieux scored his 25th career hat trick and added two assists to extend his point scoring streak to 41 games in the Penguins' 6-3 win over Edmonton, at the Civic Arena. Lemieux would record at least a point in the next 5 games where the streak would end. It was the second longest point streak in league history (Gretzky's 51 game streak still holds the record)

1991 - Defenseman Marty McSorley scored a goal and added five assists for a career high six points, to lead the Kings to a 9-1 win against Vancouver, at the Forum.

2002 - Team World beat Team North America 8-5 at the 52nd NHL All Star Game, in Los Angeles. Eric Daze at two goals and an assist and was named the game's MVP, and Mario Lemieux scored his 13th career All-Star Game goal, to tie Wayne Gretzky's record.

2003 - Atlanta's Dany Heatley tied an All-Star Game record with 4 goals, then added one more in a shootout as the Western Conference beat the East 6-5 in the NHL All Star game in Sunrise, Florida, that ended in a shootout.

    Born on this Day

1968 - Kamloops, BC native Mark Recchi turns 43 today.

There are a lot of good ones today...here we go....

1966 - Detroit's Gordie Howe scored his 20th goal of the season for the 20th straight year when the Red Wings beat the Bruins 4-2 in Boston Garden. Ya, 20 goals in 20 straight years is pretty good I guess

1972 - Boston goaltender Ed Johnston tied an NHL record with his third assist of the season in a 6-1 win over the Minnesota North Stars, at Boston Garden. The current record for points in a season by a goaltender is 14 (Grant Fuhr, Edmonton 1983-84). 14 points for a Goalie is DAMN impressive. Fuhr would be FANTASY GOLD in today's world with that kind of production

1974 - Rod Gilbert became the New York Rangers' all-time leading point scorer, when he picked up two goals and an assist in a 5-5 tie with the visiting Minnesota North Stars. Gilbert broke the team's all-time record of 729 points set by Andy Bathgate.

1983 - Boston's Wayne Cashman played in his 1,000th NHL game as the Bruins won 5-3 against the visiting Quebec Nordiques. Cashman became the second player (along with John Bucyk) to play 1,000 games with Boston.

1984 - Pat Hughes scored five goals (his second and final career hat trick and his only one with Edmonton) in the Oilers' 10-5 win over the Calgary Flames. I felt this was fitting after Franzen's 5-goal night last night.

1985 - Jari Kurri scored his 50th goal of the season for the second straight year as Edmonton beat the Hartford Whalers 6-3, to extend their team-record home winning streak to 7 games. Kurri had 4 consecutive 50+ goal seasons from 1983-84 until 1986-87 (52, 71, 68 and 54). Those would be the only times he broke 50+

1989 - Jari Kurri picked up three assists, including the 500th of his NHL career as the Oilers won 8-5 over the Detroit Red Wings. Kurri finished his NHL career with 797 assists. Not too shabby

1993 -Alexander Mogilny became the third player in team history to score 50 goals in a season (in his 46th game) to lead the Sabres to a 3-2 win against visiting Hartford Whalers. Grant Fuhr played in his first game as a Sabre, picking up the win. Mogilny had 76 goals that year. I wish I played fantasy hockey back in those days. Mogilny only passed the 50 goal mark one other time when he recorded 55 playing for 95-96 Canucks

1998 - Florida's Dino Ciccarelli became the 9th player in NHL history to score 600 career goals, in the Panthers' 1-1 tie with the visiting Detroit Red Wings.

2004 - Marco Sturm tied a franchise record (set by Owen Nolan) with his 14th career shorthanded goal for the Sharks; the milestone came in a 3-0 win over the visiting Florida Panthers. Evgeni Nabokov recorded the shutout. Now I see why the Boston Bruins traded Joe Thornton for him the following year....it all makes sense :S

On This Day in Hockey History - February 15th

1945 - Although the Rangers were two hours and twenty minutes late because of a late train from Detroit, they beat Chicago 6-2 at MSG in a penalty-free game that didn't begin until 10:50 PM and ended at 12:50 AM.

1953 - Detroit's Gordie Howe scored twice to become the youngest player in NHL history (age 24) to score 200 NHL goals. Red Wings won 4-1 over the Black Hawks at Chicago.

1974 - Boston's Phil Esposito became the 10th player in NHL history to score 1,000 career points. It came as an assist in a 4-2 Bruins' win, at Vancouver.

1989 - Chicago's Jeremy Roenick tied a club record for rookies, with four points (a goal and three assists) as the Blackhawks won 7-4 over the visiting Washington Capitals.

1994 - Tom Barrasso recorded his 253rd victory, to become the winningest U.S. born goalie in NHL history, as the Penguins won 5-3 over the visiting Winnipeg Jets. Barrasso broke the record of 252 career wins set by Frank Brimsek.

1997 - Martin Brodeur stopped 25 shots for his club-record 107th career victory, surpassing Chris Terreri for most wins by a Devils' goalie, as New Jersey won 4-1 at Montreal. The win gave Brodeur a record of 8-0-3 in his previous 11 games.

2000 - Martin Brodeur became the first goaltender in NHL history to get credit for a "game winning" goal as New Jersey won 4-2 over the visiting Philadelphia Flyers. It was Brodeur's second career goal (first in the regular season). I wouldn't mind seeing another goalie goal soon

2000- Brian Leetch scored his 180th career goal to become the New York Rangers all-time leading goal scorer among defensemen, as New York tied 2-2 at Tampa Bay. He replaced Ron Greschner, who had 179 with the Rangers.

2003 - Detroit's Brendan Shanahan scored to give him 20+ goals for the 15th consecutive season; the milestone came in a 6-2 win at Atlanta. How's that for consistency?

BIRTHDAYS - Born On This Day

1972 - NHL right winger Jaromir Jagr born in Kladno, Czech. Jagr has played in the NHL since 1990-91 with Pittsburgh, Washington, and the New York Rangers.
Happy Birthday Jagr! One of my all-time favourites (definitely all-time favourite MULLET)

1968 - Former NHL goalie Tim Cheveldae born in Melville, Sask. Cheveldae played in the NHL 1988-89 through 1996-97 with Detroit, Winnipeg and Boston.

1955 - Former NHL defenseman Russ Anderson born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Anderson played in the NHL 1976-77 through 1984-85 with Pittsburgh, Hartford and Los Angeles.

1923 - Foster Hewitt (hockey's first regular radio announcer) broadcast his first hockey game. Hewitt sat in a glass-walled booth and used a telephone to broadcast the OHA game in Toronto on radio station CFCA.
Monumental event in hockey history (to say the least)!

1969 - Red Wings' center Alex Delvecchio picked up an assist to become the third player in NHL history to score 1,000 career points. Detroit defeated the L.A. Kings 6-3.

1980 - Larry Robinson had four assists as the Canadiens improved their undefeated home streak against Pittsburgh to 33 games (30-0-3), with an 8-1 win over the Penguins
    Impressive streak for the Habs

1980 - Marcel Dionne picked up an assist for his 900th career NHL point (370 goals, 530 assists) in the Kings' 3-2 win against the Islanders at New York.

1983 - Buffalo Sabres beat Boston 3-1 at the Aud, to end Bruin goalie Pete Peeters' undefeated
streak at 26-0-5 (one game short of the NHL record for goalies).

1988 - Islanders' Bryan Trottier picked up his 800th career NHL assist as New York won 9-3 over the visiting Calgary Flames.

1992 - Chicago's Michel Goulet became the 17th player in NHL history to score 500 career goals. #500 came in a 5-5 tie between the Blackhawks and the Flames, at Chicago Stadium.

2004 - Trevor Linden became the Vancouver Canucks all-time leader in games played, when he appeared in his 897th with the team (breaking Stan Smyl's record), in a 1-0 win over the Avalanche at Colorado. Dan Cloutier recorded his 14th career shutout.

    Have a good day!

On This Day in Hockey History - Feburary 17th

1910 - Playing for a local senior team in Chicoutimi, Quebec, Georges Vezina made more than 60 saves to help his team to a 1-0 win over the Montreal Canadiens. A short time later, Vezina became the Canadiens' goalie for the next 15 years. Awesome story.

1931 - Howie Morenz became just the third player in NHL history to score 200 career goals, and George Hainsworth recorded his 58th career shutout, in the Canadiens' 2-0 win over the visiting Montreal Maroons.

1973 - Frank Mahovlich of the Montreal Canadiens notched his 1,000th NHL point with an assist in a 7-6 loss to the Flyers. Mahovlich became the eighth player in NHL history to reach 1,000 points.

1979 - Bernie Parent injured his eye in a game against the Rangers, at the Spectrum. The injury marked the end of his NHL career. In 486 career games with the Flyers, Parent was 232-141-103 with a 2.42 GAA and 50 shutouts. Sad news for a great goalie.

1981 - Los Angeles Kings obtained defenseman Rick Chartraw from Montreal in exchange for future considerations (Claude Lemieux in 1983 Entry Draft).
    Bad deal in hindsight

1993 - Hartford's Pat Verbeek scored his 300th career NHL goal and added his 300th career assist in a 5-3 Whalers' loss to Buffalo.
I am always impressed when players reach two milestones on the same night. The fact that Verbeek recorded 300 G AND 300A on the same night makes it more impressive.

1997 - Chicago defenseman Gary Suter recorded his 700th career NHL point, with an assist in a 4-2 loss to St. Louis.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY - Born On This Day

1960 - Former NHL player Lindy Ruff born in Warburg, Alberta. Ruff played in the NHL 1979-80 through 1990-91 with Buffalo and the New York Rangers. In 1997-98 Ruff became head coach of the Buffalo Sabres.

1964 - Former NHL goalie Darren Pang born in Meaford, Ont. Pang played in the NHL 1984-85 through 1988-89 with Chicago.

1966 - Former NHL superstar winger Luc Robitaille born in Montreal, Que. played in the NHL 1986-87 through 2005-2006 with Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, New York Rangers and Detroit.

    Some really good ones today!

On This Day in Hockey History - February 18th

1918 - Montreal Canadiens' goalie Georges Vezina recorded the first shutout in NHL history, blanking Toronto 9-0. It came in the NHL's third month of play, in the league's first season.
Read below for an interesting stat also about Vezina and his shutout.

1927 - Montreal's Georges Vezina recorded his 13th (and final) career NHL shutout to lead the Canadiens to a 1-0 win over the Maroons. Pretty cool that Vezina got his first AND last shutout on the same day 10 years apart

1954 - Montreal beat Detroit 4-2, but during the game, Gordie Howe was advised that he had become the father of a baby boy, who he later named Marty.

1968 - The first NHL game was played at the fourth "Madison Square Garden" (home of the New York Rangers). Rangers won 3-1 over the Philadelphia Flyers. Legendary rink!

1981 - Hartford Whalers retired Gordie Howe's uniform number 9. Whalers tied 3-3 with the visiting Winnipeg Jets.

1982 - Los Angeles Kings called up Bernie Nicholls, who had been playing with New Haven of the AHL. Nicholls went on to score 14 goals and 18 assists in the final 21 games of the 1981-82 season for the Kings. Sick rookie debut!

1987 - Los Angeles Kings' Luc Robitaille set a new club record with his 34th goal of the season, breaking the rookie mark set by Steve Bozek (33) in 1981-82, as the Kings beat the Capitals 7-4.

1988 - Wayne Gretzky scored two goals and five assists in career game #754, to give him a career total of 1,800 NHL points. They came in an 11-3 Kings' win over the Quebec Nordiques at the Forum.

1990 - Defenseman Ray Bourque had the biggest scoring night of his 22 year NHL career, when he scored a goal and added five assists to lead Boston to a 7-2 win at Vancouver. With five assists Bourque became the 7th NHL defenseman to score 600 assists.

1999 - Panthers' Sean Burke and Blues' Jamie McLennan traded zeroes as Florida and St. Louis played to a 0-0 tie at the Kiel Center. It was the Blues' first scoreless tie in St. Louis since January 7, 1978 (vs Chicago). It wasn't too long ago that TIES were actually allowed.

1999 - Hurricanes Paul Coffey became the second player in NHL history (and the first defenseman) to record 1,100 career assists. The milestone came in a 2-2 tie against the Capitals, in Greensboro, North Carolina.

2004 - Ottawa Senators acquired winger Peter Bondra from the Washington Capitals, in exchange for winger Brooks Laich and a second-round draft pick in 2005.

Happy Birthday! - Born On This Day

1954 - Former NHL defenseman Marty Howe born in Detroit, Michigan. Howe played in the NHL 1979-80 through 1984-85 with Hartford and Boston. Gordie Howe was notified half-way through his current game of his son's birth.
