That contract was probably only way he wasn’t forced to stay in army… it’s a mess over there…

This doesn't sound good for Ellis. Cant say I've ever heard of a psoas muscle before.

Keith Jones also talked about Ryan Ellis & him likely having played his final NHL game because of a torn psoas muscle in his back: "We all wish for Ryan just as a human being, because I've been through that at the end of my career (1/2)

when there's uncertainty about whether you would come back or not and then dealing with the reality of not coming back. It's a tough time. It's a very really difficult time. I'm very sympathetic to what he's gone through."

When asked about a surgical option: "I think that he's exhausting everything that he can in order to play, like we all do. You never want to have the void of not doing something that you'd love to do. He did it very effectively when he played so it's got to be really difficult."

It's like the strongest muscle attached to the spin or something. It's like attaching the spin to the inside of the hips and it runs from the bottom of where the ribs end to the hips. It's at a spot where I have no clue how'd you properly rehab or fix it. Really feel for him.

It essentially connects the upper body to the lower body, and is apart of the hip flexor muscles group. Which is a huge muscle for hockey players.

    Not surprising news on Ellis.
But does raise interesting strategy for PHI (which, obviously - THEY already knew they'd need to do).
Once a team has an LTIR player - it's to their benefit to push their opening day roster as close to $83.5m (active players) as possible.
(So that the LTIR player added gives them maximum effective cap - i.e. that of the basically the active players.)

I'm interested to see if Briere will offer to eat cap-space for anybody.

PHI is at about $73m right now.
Maybe $3m-$5m for Frost, depending on term.
So they can look to climb as close to $83.5m - eating other team's unattractive cap guys...
And then have the Ellis $6.25m as their effective LTIR.

Briere's got a chance to weaponize cap hit/cap space with a lock LTIR player.
If he doesn't push to $83.5m... he actually limits what he can do throughout the year.
    {since either a) Their cap would be some amount lower than $6.25m over $83.5m - possibly as low as $77.25m, effectively - if they don't reach cap WITH Ellis}

    Get to work Danny!

It's been pretty clear that Ellis is done for a while. They do need to figure out what bad cap guys with little term to take on, as this is an opportunity. Thankfully Fletcher isn't still in charge.

There are plenty of teams who need cap room, but they need to not use a retained salary slot. I'd be more interested to see a forward come in than a defender. Might get one of each, though.

Crappy but expected news for Ellis.

I was really excited when the Flyers added him.
Wish I could have seen a lot more of him in the orange and black.

On ice, the team will be better than last year if Couturier returns and can play reasonably well. There are still some guys who need to get moved, but one can only deal with so many of them at once. Only guy who has gone that they may miss is Provorov. Losing DeAngelo is addition by subtraction.

Off the ice, Briere is an upgrade at GM over Fletcher, just like a large segment of the hockey world would be, including this forum. I cannot overstate how much of an upgrade that is. As long as Clarke & Holmgren stay marginalized or completely sidelined, things will improve.

Bottom 5, hopefully... and I think, realistically.
The D is trash / young (inexperienced).
They'll be right there with CHI, ANA, SJ again.
    I think that's bottom 4 with PHI.

Arizona is a team that should take a good step forward given Cooley signing and the depth in their forward group.

Watching Flyers v Sens - Couturier looks great! Also looks like Sanheim on instead of York on the 5 on 3 PP (nice puck movement leading to Konecny snipe).

UPDATE: But York on PP1 to start the 2nd.
