Is Rinaldo full time goon, next year?
Is Rinaldo full time goon, next year?
@SmittysRant
I give him slightly less than 50/50 chance here. Shelley's cap hit, one year left, and lack of skating (or more accurately, the fact that he really can't take a regular shift without compromising the effectiveness of the fourth line) make him a possible target to be replaced by either Rinaldo or even a less accomplished guy like Sestito.
Whether Carcillo is resigned or not will also be a factor, ...a guy like Sestito may be a better fit as replacemnt for Carcillo, depending on how young the roster looks, the Flyers may want Shelley's veteran presence for the room as much for on the ice. Carcillo has the advantage of being able to be spotted higher up in the lineup and chipping in (skating), Sestito has the advantage of possibly developing into more rounded player, still adding toughness, and being cheap, ...and Rinaldo has the advantage of being a possible inexpensive young gun enforcer, ...but all but Shelley have the disadvantage of not being big enough to be true heavyweights.
As an enforcer though, it seemed pretty clear that it's a young man's game, while Shelley's certainly willing to go with anyone, and is a true throughback with regards to protecting his teammates, there were very few heavy weights last season that he was successful in battling.
The old saying "The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak" comes to mind.
Couple these factors with Laviolettes discouragement of his players fighting, and the Flyers may choose to go with a less accomplished more rounded, and inexpensive player in the role.
I see a choice of two between Rinaldo/Sestito/Shelley/Carcillo, but at least one of Carcillo or Shelley figures to go.

Too funny to not post:
From Phillygameday.com

"Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren announced Friday that he is extremely hungover and while he can’t remember a thing that happened yesterday, he is in the process of trying to piece everything together if you will just bare with him for a minute.
Holmgren said he vaguely remembers something about a trade and hearing people curse, but he wasn’t sure if that was part of a dream or if that actually happened.
“The last thing I really remember was taking a shot from these two exotic-looking women” said Holmgren, who was then roofied into trading Jeff Carter to Columbus and Mike Richards to Los Angeles while signing Ilya Bryzgalov to a nine-year $51 million deal. “Next thing I know, I’m waking up on South Street this morning with 7,519 angry text messages.”
Holmgren said he would try to reach out to his star captain Mike Richards to find out more about what happened last night and also plans to talk with Jeff Carter about his thoughts on adding Ilya Bryzgalov to the team."

Hahahahahaha Classic stuff.
Hmmm, nothing posted in here for awhile, watching tonight's Flyers/Devils game and thought i'd give some very general impressions. The Mullet still has game, looks real good playing with Giroux should be fun to watch these 2 all season.Voracek shows flashes of awesome skill but nothing seems to come from it,needs a heart transplant.Couturier looks good but needs to grow into his body, shows very good skill but gets knocked off the puck too easily.Bryz looked fine and Bobs looked real sharp.Simmonds will be a fan favorite, another goal tonight and was doing all the little things well.Pronger looked real good for his first game he is going to be fine.
On the Devils side Marty looked good, expect a better season from him this year.Parise was flying around and looked good,he will be fine. Was really impressed with Larsson, looks like a vet out there very poised on and off the puck, has a real nice shot actually reminds me of a nicer version of Pronger, kid is a player.
Are we gonna roll with Bryz and Bob all year?
Trade Bob for a cheaper option would be what I was thinking.
People keep throwing me offers for JVR but I have resisted so far as I see good things from him this season. Especially as he is a quality LW and they are hard to come by in Fantasy hockey.
If I did consider trading him what would you say his worth was?

For the most part he has looked pretty good, shows flashes of above average hands and skating, occasionally does some digging in the corners(needs to do more). And at other times he is just coasting around.Averaged about 16 mins.of ice time and had 2 assists in the pre-season games, will start the season on the 2nd line(some say 1B) with Briere and Hartnell. Now whether he stays there or not is debatable,i see him back and forth between 2nd and 3rd lines depending on his effort in games.
Still no word on the Flyers Final cuts, but here is an article with some decent analysis.
