Sounds like the latest tree the Oilers are shaking is Ekholm. I don't know how or if they can make the financials work, but this is one worth pursuing.

He's older with term left on a big deal but he's a good fit for what they need. Nashville are sellers.

I think Holland is shaking most teams shopping Dmen but no deals yet. The lack of cap space and dollar in/dollar out approach isn't helping his cause. I'm not expecting much to happen for the Oilers at the deadline. Holland will tell us he's been in on most players but the prices were too high, blah blah blah...

I hope I'm wrong and upgrades are found, but I'm not expecting it.

I'm surprised how much playoff teams push themselves up against the cap (at season start) so they have no room left to work with come trade deadline.

Getting several players with pro rated cap hits is a huge boost to an off season push. I'd be looking to exploit this hard for a playoff push., while trying not to lose all my future assets).

Though I suppose selling teams are also selling salary cap retention to gain an even larger haul... Not like they need the cap space.

Yeah, that's what I've been saying as well and I totally get the logic too. Keep the powder dry and take your big swing at the draft. The team has performed well when fully healthy, we just haven't seen it enough to have any confidence and exposes some of the glaring roster flaws that they don't have the room to fix.
