If he was still an above-average NHL goalie like he once was, he stops two of those goals. Any better and he'd have to have been elite. He is neither now, but is, at best, an NHL quality goaltender who is likely in the last year of his career.

That's what I mean by prime; he is not in his prime and he does not play like any NHL goalie in his prime, because he is neither of those things. I still don't think you can hang the loss on him alone.
Gotcha - I agree with all of these points except the assertion that he is an NHL calibre goalie. He is well below replacement value at the NHL level. It's telling with regards to the make-up of the Oilers roster that he is being asked to be that.

When was Mike Smith ever a top 10 goalie? 2011-2012? For one season? That is an outlier season, given the rest of his career results. He has spent most of his career in the 15-25 range, which when you start to slip makes you at best a backup, and more likely that TD is correct. In 2018-2019 and in 2019-2020 he was in the 40-50 range of goalies who played more than 20 games. Remove that filter and he's worse.

And lets not pretend that every player in the NHL has a job on merit. There's lots of things that go into that. So. TD is correct, Smith absolutely is below replacement level and not an NHL calibre goalie.

With a point tonight Connor would tie Sid with 500 points in his first 369 games.

McDavid would be proud to match Sid's 500-point mark: 'He’s a great guy to follow'

Jones is the Oilers 3rd best dman. You could argue that a 100% healthy and engaged Larsson is better but Jones is their 2nd best left shot dman for sure. There's no way that any of Koekkoek, Russell or Lagesson should be playing ahead of him let alone all 3 of them.

    Evidence #1

    Jason Adams

There is no better neutralizer to Connor McDavid in the league than Kris Russell.

    McDavid XGF% without Russell: 69.19%
    McDavid XGF% with Russell: 45.87%
    Russell XGF% without McDavid: 40.30%

Why he's getting in over Jones is baffling.

    Evidence #2

Last year among Defenseman 25 and under Caleb Jones ranked:
24th in total GAR and xGAR
    9th in GAR/gp
    10th in xGAR/gp
    5th in GAR/60
    1st!! in xGAR/60
    Jones was 22 for context.
There isn't a chance that we have him after the expansion draft.
