Well right off the top Stephan is a near even (slightly positive Fen rel and slightly negative Corsi rel) possession player on a terrible Sens team and Turris is near negative 8 on both possestion metrics. As the season a partially over Stephan's cap hit is now down to just over $5 mil and I think he's owed $2mil in real $$. Bury a boat anchor or two and bob's your uncle - better team.

Edmonton isn't worried about real money. They dont have cap space. The variance in production between the two doesn't justify making space just to bring in Stepan.

There's bigger issues than Turris in regards to making their team better. Stepan is not a game breaking move for EDM, especially at that cap hit.

There are soooo many players on that team making them demonstrably worse at whatever cap hit. Perhaps it's not really a big deal to get better right now. But this is not a playoff roster. Stephan in and whatever they need to move out, out, makes the team better. That should be the goal.

Even if Stepan is marginally better (at best), the end doesn't justify the means when it comes to the cap situation the Oilers are in. Stepan's cap hit makes him a non-issue in Edmonton.

I've been much happier with the way the Oilers have played as of late. Held their own against the Maple Leafs, who are a strong team. The Habs are chewing through everyone right now. Given the tough schedule, I am cautiously optimistic about the team at the moment.

I'm not certain adding in a player like Stepan, with his massive cap hit, is smart idea.

Turris has been garbage though for sure. I just think there are better options available - such as guys like Gaetan Haas back on the roster improving the bottom end.

Fenwick Relative and Corsi Relative are numbers that show how a team does when one player is on the ice relative to how that team does when he is not on the ice. So Stepan's positive numbers says he's better than his teammates. Turris' numbers say he's doing worse than his teammates. It would be shocking if those numbers were reversed but it does not mean that Stepan is better (or even doing better this year) than Turris.

Edmonton #Oilers goalie Mike Smith ready for action as Troy Grosenick is waived.

Will the Oilers lose Grosenick just like they lost Anton Forberg? I hope not.
Will be nice to have Smith back, but will suck if we lose another goalie to waivers. I cant figure out why they didnt put Skinner on waivers instead of Grosenick. Technically, both would have to go on waivers before going down anyway, but I would be more worried about Grosenick getting claimed than if we lost Skinner. Grosenick isn't anything special but he's still a better option than Skinner.

Smith returning helps in that Tippett will actually be willing to use him to spell Koskinen so Koskinen can at least be fresh, but he's still not better than any of the other options, shouldn't still be on this team and will more than likely drown them when he does play. I still don't consider this position resolved.

More on Stepan, his cap hit decreases with each passing day and the Sens could retain half, so by mid-season his cap hit would be $3.25M and they could retain half to drag it down to half. Still a tight fit but cap magic can be accomplished. By then we'll probably have a much firmer answer on Turris NOT being the answer.

I maybe wrong but I don't think his cap hit decreases with time, just the amount he's owed. The cap hit is based on how much Ottawa is willing to retain. If they are willing to retain 50%, the remaining 50% would count against the other teams cap for the remainder of his term.
