Default [Tea Time Challenge] Re-Doing the 2003 NHL Draft

Arguably the best ever NHL draft class in history, the 2003 draftees had an abundance of talent and have become for sure NHLers (well, except Hugh Jessiman).

I Challenge you guys to redraft the players selected in the 1st round of the 2003 NHL Draft as you feel fit. Yes, you will have to select Hugh Jessiman somewhere in the draft

Who will you pick 1st? 2nd? 3rd Overall? Your choice.

Let's assume you are drafting the "best overall player" and not drafting based on the team needs.

This is how it went down....

I will wait to make my do-over but could you imagine if Edmonton had kept their 2003 1st and had the chance to select Zach Parise....wow

Edmonton traded its 17th (Parise) overall pick for 22nd (Selected MA Pouliot) and 68th overall (JF Jacques) - Do you think that EDMONTON would want a do-over on that deal?

Way worse than the Kessel deal

Do you really believe Edmonton would hve picked Parise anyway? After all, Kesler, Richards and Perry were all still on the board when they made their pick.

In 5 years time, the Kessel deal will look worse than it already does.

Great thread though, that really was an amazing draft class. Some other good players went in the second round are Eriksson, P Bergeron, Weber, Backes, Howard.

After that it fell off a bit until round 7 where Pavelski went, 8 with Byfuglien and 9 with Halak.

There are a few other names in the draft who could prove to be stars but those are the ones that stood out to me. Brian Elliot was drafted with the second last pick in that draft too.
    Without me, it's only "aweso".

I should mention, I will be making this "Re-Doing the _____ Draft" a regular occurring feature in the PG Advised section. So look for more to come.

Love it. Looking forward to it!

I'll be doing mine later on, but it echos a lot of the lists already.

Fun fact: Philadelphia now has 4 players selected in the first round of the 2003 Entry draft - Richards, Carter, Zherdev, Coburn.

Here is my shot at it

    1. PIT - Ryan Getzlaf
    2. CAR - Zach Parise
    3. FLA - Eric Staal
    4. CLB - Mike Richards
    5. BUF - Corey Perry
    6. SJS - Ryan Kesler
    7. NSH - Jeff Carter
    8. ATL - Ryan Suter
    9. CGY - Dion Phaneuf
    10. MTL - Marc-Andre Fleury
    11. PHI - Brent Seabrook
    12. NYR - Dustin Brown
    13. LOS - Nathan Horton
    14. CHI - Thomas Vanek
    15. NYI - Braydon Coburn
    16. SJ (from BOS) - Andrei Kostitsyn
    17. NJ (from EDM) - Brent Burns
    18. WAS - Eric Fehr
    19. ANA - Milan Michalek
    20. MIN - Nikolay Zherdev
    21. BOS - Mark Stuart
    22. EDM (from NJ-STL) - Brian Boyle
    23. VAN - Steve Bernier
    24. PHI - Anthony Stewart
    25. FLA (from TB) - Patrick Eaves
    26. LOS (from COL) - Jeff Tambellini
    27. LOS (from DET) - Marc-Antoine Pouliot
    28. ANA (from DAL) - Shawn Belle
    29. OTT - Robert Nilsson
    30. STL - Hugh Jessiman

A Few notes about my selections...

    - I have Mark Stuart (BOS), Eric Fehr (WAS) and Jeff Tambellini (LOS) being selected by the same team who actually drafted them
    - NJD would kill to have Brent Burns right now
    - Corey Perry on Buffalo is just what the Sabres need - a big power forward who can score
    - Marc-Andre Fleury back to his home province
    - I had a very difficult time deciding between Ryan Suter and Dion Phaneuf as the top Defenceman. In the end, if I was a GM I would pick the underrated Ryan Suter over Dion.

Yep. Definitely pretty amazing. I can't remember but the last time that this happened was back in the early 80s.

    EDIT:
To quote Fzusher from another thread:
The Panthers just called Hugh Jessiman. If he plays, he'll make his NHL debut, and the 2003 draft will become the first since 1983 and only the third since the entry draft replaced the amateur draft in 1979 in which all first rounders have played at least one NHL game.

Just to keep this in perspective, 1983 was the Steve Yzerman, Claude Lemieux, Cam Neely, Dave Gagner (and 1st overall, Brian Lawton ... ) draft.

Love it, amazing to look at that class and the depth in it. Was pretty hard to go wrong in the first round! Way to go Edmonton.
