On this Day in Hockey History - November 15

There were some doozies on this day....check them out!

1915 - The NHA (forerunner of the National Hockey League) agreed to pay no more than $800 to each player for the upcoming season. $800 looks like a penny on the sidewalk after Kovalchuk signed his $100 million dollar contract this past summer

1973 - Boston's Bobby Orr had three power play goals and added four assists to become the first NHL defenseman to score seven points in one game, as the Bruins beat the New York Rangers 10-2. 7 poins by a dman! That's fantasy GOLD!

1984 - Philadelphia retired uniform #16, worn by center Bobby Clarke, who ended his 15-year career as Philadelphia's all-time leading scorer (1,210 points). I had no idea that Clarke's jersey was retired. I learned something today

1992 - Philadelphia rookie Eric Lindros scored three goals for his first career NHL hat trick, and added an assist, and Mark Recchi had a goal and four assists to lead the Flyers to a 7-2 win over Ottawa at the Spectrum. ahhh I miss the BIG E. He was my favourite player of all time

2002 - Patrick Roy became the NHL career leader in minutes played, passing Terry Sawchuk as the Avalanche lost 4-2 to the Stars at Dallas.

2002 - Dallas' Mike Modano became the 5th U.S. born player to reach the 1,000 NHL point milestone, when he picked up an assist as the Stars won 4-2 against the visiting Colorado Avalanche.

Kiprusoff went on to lead the NHL in GAA etc. Kiprusoff went on to have a record of 24-10-4, and led the NHL with a 1.69 GAA. What a DAMN good deal in hindsight for Calgary - awful for SJ

See ya Tomorrow! Enjoy (i hope)

The Swedish Ice Hockey Federation was founded

    1932
When Detroit met Montreal for the first time in the season there was a problem: both teams had nearly identical red jerseys! The Wings were forced to wear white pullovers in a 1-0 loss. George Hainsworth recorded his 68th career shutout.

    1974
Rangers rookie Rick Middleton set a team rookie record with five points in a 10-0 win over the Oakland Seals. Middleton had four goals (his 1st career hat trick) along with an assist. Gilles Villemure recorded his 12th career shutout.

Love Oates but he needs to get that NJ Powerplay going

    "The Roadrunner!"

    1947
STAT Red Wing Gordie Howe scored the first of his 118 regular season game-winning goals. Detroit beat Chicago at home, 8-5.
Fun Fact - On NHL.com they have Jagr listed as the all time leader in career regular season GW goals with 112. Unfortunately, they do not have the stats for Howe in the GW goals cat. He would indeed be 1st on that list.

    1962

    1986
MILESTONE Buffalo's Gilbert Perreault played in the 1,191st (and final) game of his 17-year NHL career as the Sabres lost to the Quebec Nordiques 3-1. Perreault retired 22nd on all-time games played list.
Perreault is a player I wish I could have seen (or remembered) play the game. From all things I have read - he was a dandy

    1989
TEAM RECORD: Doug Wilson became the first defenseman in Chicago Blackhawks history to score 200 goals, when the team lost 6-3 at Los Angeles.

Isn't it great that Gretzky choose to RETIRE in the year 1999? How fitting. I wonder if that was his plan all along

My apologies to anyone who follows this thread I missed a few days. Life got busy

On This Day in Hockey History - November 26th

    1917
The National Hockey League was founded. The original teams were the Montreal Canadiens, Montreal Wanderers, Ottawa Senators, Toronto Arenas, and Quebec Bulldogs (which announced that they would not operate during the inaugural season).
I would say this was a pretty significant day in history

Frank Calder was elected as the NHL's first president.
    I never knew this

    1925
Pittsburgh Pirates and NY Americans franchises were officially acccepted into the NHL. The Americans purchased the Hamilton Tigers roster to fill its lineup, while the Pirates purchased the USHL's Pittsburgh Yellow Jackets.

NHL announced it's new "anti-defense" rule, which would prohibit teams from having more than two players in their own zone when the puck was not present. The NHL also upped the number of regular season games from 30 to 36 for the upcoming season.
    What a strange rule!

    1961
Detroit's Gordie Howe became the first player in NHL history to play in 1,000 career regular season games, when the Red Wings lost 4-1 at Chicago

    1975
Bobby Orr played his final game with Boston, scoring a goal and adding an assist, in a 6-4 Bruins' win over the Rangers at MSG. Orr finished with 264 goals, 888 points in 631 games with Boston, before joining Chicago.

    1980
Edmonton rookie Jari Kurri got his first NHL hat trick and added an assist, and Wayne Gretzky
scored a goal and picked up four assists to lead the Oilers to a 10-3 win over the Black Hawks.

    1983
Edmonton's Wayne Gretzky began an NHL-record 17 consecutive game assist streak, at St. Louis. It came in the midst of his NHL record 51-game point scoring streak (during which he scored 153 points). Oilers lost 8-6 to Blues.

    1984
Two days after playing against Detroit, Montreal's Guy Lafleur announced his "first" retirement. He ended his "first" career with 518 goals and a Canadiens' team record of 728 assists for a team record 1,246 points.

    1999
Steve Yzerman scored his 600th NHL goal in the Red Wings 4-2 win against the visiting Edmonton Oilers. Yzerman joined Gretzky, Howe, Dionne and Messier as the only NHL players with 600 goals and 900 assists.

Detroit's Larry Murphy became the fourth player (and first defenseman) in NHL history to appear in 1,500 career NHL games. The milestone came in a 4-2 win over the visiting Edmonton Oilers. Murphy picked up two assists in the game
This would later be broken by Scott Stevens on the SAME DAY (see below)

    2003
Scott Stevens set an NHL record for defenseman by playing in his 1,616th career NHL game (breaking the record held by Larry Murphy) as the Devils tied 3-3 against the Mighty Ducks, at Anaheim.

STRIKE NHL Officials announced the end of their strike, which had begun on November 15, 1993.

    1995
MILESTONE: Kings' Rick Tocchet scored a goal for his 700th career NHL point, as Los Angeles won 3-2 over Washington, at the Forum.

    1996
STAT Mario Lemieux had a goal and three assists for his 1,400th career point and Ron Francis added a goal and two assists for his 900th career assist in the Penguins' 6-2 win over Boston. Lemiuex became the 9th NHL player to score 1,400 points.
    Two AWESOME NHLers!

    2001
STAT Peter Bondra scored twice to set a franchise record for career goals (breaking Mike Gartner's club record of 397) as the Capitals won 6-2 against the visiting Carolina Hurricanes.
I was always caught cheering for Peter Bondra - very talented

    2002
INDUCTION: Former NHL stars Peter Stastny, Stan Mikita and Vaclav Nedomansky were inducted into the newly created Slovak Hockey Hall of Fame in Bratislava, capital of Slovakia.

    2003
TRADE Los Angeles Kings acquired forward Martin Straka from the Pittsburgh Penguins for defenseman Martin Strbak and winger Sergei Anshakov.

BOLD PREDICTION of the NIGHT - November 30th, 2010
