Default #1 and #5 Overall Draft Picks

Ongoing Keeper League and I have the #1 and #5 Picks in this years draft. I\'ve been debating this all summer and would like to get everyone opinion on who they would pick. Here are the top players available:

    Nicklas Backstrom

    Jordan Staal
    Derek Roy
    Jonathan Toews
    Patrick Kane
    Peter Mueller
    Bryan Little
    Andrei Kostitsyn
    11 Team Keeper League
    Scoring: G (3); A (2); +/- (1); Hits (0.1); PPP (1); SOG (0.2); W (4); GA (-1); SV (0.2); SHO (4)
Forwards: Ovechkin, Parise, Nichushkin, Domi, Eriksson, Toffoli, Boedker, Kuznetsov, Huberdeau, Duclair, Teravainen, Spooner, Silfverberg, Grigorenko and Wilson
Defense: Pietrangelo, Suter, Carlson, Voynov, Edler, Letang, Pouliot, Beaulieu, Gormley and Sekera
Goalies: Rask, Allen, Gibson, Greiss, Raanta and Kuemper
Farm Team: Mantha, Rattie, Bennett, Goldobin, Shinkaruk, Nurse, Theodore, Matheson and Jarry
    2015 Draft Picks: 2nd, 3rd and 9th overall picks

    My rankings would be:

    1. Stastny -- already valuable, proven commodity, will contribute right away for a long time.
    2. Nicklas Backstrom -- unproven, but still lots of talent and in a good position teamwise.
    3. Jonathan Toews -- unproven, very talented, will begin to impact within a year.
    4. Derek Roy -- interchangeable with Toews depending on your schedule -- will contribute NOW but lower upside.
    5. Peter Mueller -- huge upside, Phoenix can\'t suck forever...right?
    6. Bryan Little -- close to cracking a golden top 2 line with Kovalchuk, Kozlov, Hossa...mmm.
    7. Jordan Staal -- will be a huge player one day...but so far he\'s been practicing centering his own line in training camp. His own 3rd line...
    8. Patrick Kane -- huge talent but I\'m still a bit worried about his size slowing him from transitioning into the NHL
    9. Andrei Kostitsyn -- Not sold on him. Seems pretty streaky. The talent is there but MTL seems like a wasteland for players like that.

    Shoeless,

There is no limit in time for the keepers, as long as I have enough spots, which shouldn\'t be an issue.

Well this is a tough list to rank.

Just from the seat of my pants I am going with

    Backstrom
    Stastny
    Toews
    Staal
    Mueller
    Little
    Kostitsyn
    Roy
    Kane

There is some rationale here but it is so hard to seperate guys base on potential.

    Jonathan Toews
    Patrick Kane
    Andrei Kostitsyn
    Peter Mueller
    Bryan Little

My list based on top potential vs now factor.
If you can wait, Kane & Toews will have better top points than Roy. I like Kostitsyn to make an impact this year. Mueller and Little have excellent potential but will need 2 or more years to develop.

I think you've got to go with Backstrom #1. The kid's only 21 and will be setting up Ovechkin for years to come.

After Backstrom I think I'd go with Toews, Stastny, Roy, Little, Kane, Mueller, Staal, Kosty

Personally, I think that Backstrom/Kane would be a pretty solid first round for you.

Finally, I just want to add that Jordan Tsaal is a hell of a player, but as long as he's stuck behind Crosby and Malkin he's not going to be as valuable as some of those other guys.

    My order would be:

    Nicklas Backstrom
    Jonathan Toews
    Patrick Kane
    Derek Roy
    Paul Statsny
    Bryan Little
    Peter Mueller
    Andrei Kostitsyn
    Jordan Staal

If you could end up getting 2 of those Top 5, I think you will be very happy for years to come. Backstrom is by far your #1 selection though, do not think twice about that one.

    Happy drafting.
