I won’t lie Bedard is a great player and had a pretty nice rookie season and I’m certain he will win. But I do think Faber is more deserving. I mean the high ice time he played against the toughest competition and still putting up a .5 ppg as a rookie d man he looks very impressive. If it was my choice id give it to Faber but Bedard will win and honestly he’s just so darn good.

Faber was put in a situation where it did not take elite talent to thrive. He is not as good as one would project him to be based on this season. Think Filip Hronek or perhaps at best Cam Fowler.

On paper - I'd say this is... "close".

Bedard is special. He looked special with a very blah cast around him.
Faber was fantastic. MIN was decimated on D, so he got a lot of minutes and did a great job with them.

Faber's shot metrics were a net negative though...
In 816min with Jake Middleton, 45.2% Corsi share
In 585min with Jonas Brodin, 46.9% Corsi share
    https://frozenpool.dobbersports.com/...L&situation=EV

Bedard's were bad too (40% ish).

But Bedard's linemates AND D were both trash.
    Faber's forwards were... pretty solid.

Overall - Bedard - even without hype - just passes the eye-test here.
I do expect Faber to take a good 20%-30% of the first place votes though... people putting eyes on him will appreciate his two-way play.

But I do expect Bedard will take a 60%-80% first place share.

why is Faber getting all the love over Hughes?

both were put into their situations, both guys had come out with the same points, Hughes had a much worse +/- and also played slightly less ATOI, but basically close.

im not saying either would / should win but still...

For me, I look at Hughes as an offensive Dman and I look at Faber as both an offensive and defensive Dman. Faber got a ton of PP TOI, like Hughes, but Faber was also the main penalty killer on D for Minny. He was used a ton in all situations. We can't say the same for Hughes.

If you had to ask me who I'd want to build my D around, it would be Faber over Hughes. I'm talking real life if course, not fantasy, much like these awards. They aren't looking at it from a fantasy hockey point if view like a lot of us do around these parts.
