Bob Cole has sadly passed away at 90yrs old.

he was an institution on HNIC. as much as i ragged on him for being a homer...he was a great listen on the broadcasts...him and Harry Neale were the best in their day.

Sad indeed, yet another icon passes, and we all feel that much older. I had to laugh at the "homer" comment, absolutely true, but that's the way it was back then. As biased as Cole was, Danny Gallivan and Dick Irvin were as bad or worse. If the Canadiens were losing a game both Gallivan and Irvin were damn near in tears!! It all balanced out I guess. As much as it irked us back then, that kind of passion just doesn't exist anymore and I kind of miss it.

I think Cole was the worst play by play announcer CBC has ever had. Never liked him. He was always behind on the plays. His emotion never aligned with the plays on the ice. For example, a goalie would make a great save and Cole would matter of factly say, "and that's stopped by ....".
He seemed to be in his own world at times.

hymm i think it depends how you interpreted his commentary. I used to have volume up often if i couldn't watch the game and his voice would make me jump to the TV and there would be something exciting every time...i thought his emotions followed the game perfectly.....interesting how you see it completely opposite...guess thats why we all have our opinions!

certainly toward the end of his tenure, he did get behind a bit for sure...perhaps some recency bias. but you cannot deny that most of the highlights that get re-rolled during big times of the year are Bob Cole voices you hear behind (or in front of ) the video.
