More about protecting their young goalies? I don't think the Devils planned on having Schmid up this year at all.

MTL is retaining 50%. Allen's deal expires July 1st 2025. So his cap hit is $1.925m next yr.

Saros wouldn't have been moved this deadline given the push. Markstrom, maybe asking price is too high? Originally I thought NJ will use the off-season to address goaltending with some UFA / RFA but then they just picked up Allen. Puzzled as well.

I would think so. Allen at 50% is a very serviceable 1.9m on the Devils cap. Can't imagine they bring back Vanecek; I don't think they necessarily wanted to bring him back this year after his playoff performances.

Watch - Allen is going to carry the Devils to the playoffs and win a couple rounds for them.

I think they make another push for Markstrom or Saros in the offseason with the aim of unloading either Allen or Vanecek as part of the deal. Then they buy out the other and use Schmid/Daws as the backup to Markstrom/Saros.
EDIT: Ullmark will probably also be available this offseason, so he gives the Devils another potential target. It's kind of shaping up to be a buyer's market for goalies.

Not after hearing the price. Nashville would need a huge offer for Saros considering their crazy playoff push. And one report is that Calgary ownership is demanding Mercer and picks for Markstrom. If that is the case they can keep the 34-year old goalie.

As others have said this is just tacklebox organization to get ready to pursue a big fish this summer.
Buyout VV, include Daws or Schmid in a deal for a Saros/Markstrom/Ullmark, have Allen as a reliable backup.
As a Devils fan itÂ’s not the move I wanted but whatever. For me itÂ’s Saros or bust so at least that still has hope.
