[TRADE] Byram to Buffalo, Mittelstadt to Colorado

I think I saw that Buffalo said they plan to keep Byram for now (and with their playoff hopes dwindling, maybe playing one of Byram, Dahlin, or Power on their off side isn't a major concern), but you'd have to think they will look to move one of them (presumably Byram) in the offseason.

Unless one of Dahlin, Power or Byram plan on moving to their off side and plays the right side, I don't understand this trade for Buffalo. I understand why they traded Middlestadt but I don't understand why Byram.

They want all the young franchise d. It sucks to see Byram go to a place where he will be buried again. I would love to have seen him to be the guy for once.

Yeah, I like it for Buffalo the more I think about it. Gives them some flexibility in the coming years. And a really nice D corp that they can stack up a little bit or spread over three pairings.

I like Mittelstadt and think he's still got some room. Was just very difficult to see him sticking in Buffalo's top 6 long term and he's due for a pay raise a year before Byram.

Very good point. Krebs' stock just rose considerably. I already went and pulled the trigger on some of his key rookie cards, which thankfully were still at pre-trade bargain prices.

But IRL, Dahlin, Byram, Power is a ridiculous set of puck-mover for BUF's insane F corps/prospects to get cookies from.

BUF "had" to make some space up front... getting Byram in the process is a tidy bit of work from KA imo.

It really is. They filled a massive hole and subtracted a underachieving, injury-prone player that played a position of strength. Considering the fit and injury history of Byram it is a very safe trade for Colorado. And adding Walker to fill Byram's spot this season is a tidy bit of business. The risk here is with Buffalo. While Byram might turn out to be the best player in the trade, he has created a logjam at D and probably cannot reach his full potential due to Dahlin at the minimum being in front of him. If the plan is to trade him this offseason we'll have to reassess.

I agree with Axe. This doesn't make alot of sense for Buffalo. Columbus tried loading up on a bunch of dmen who all fill the same role and look how that panned out.

They've invested like $30m into Samuelsson who plays the left side too. So next yr one of the 4 (Dahlin, Power, Samuelsson, Byram) isn't a Sabre, or 1 is playing their offside. Then in 2025-26 season one is playing their offside getting paid a lot.

Would definitely be better if one was a righty, but I'm not all that concerned about one playing on their off-side if that's what it comes too. Powers played a good chunk on his offside last night and looked just fine. Small sample, but it can be done. Used to be very taboo for wingers to play off-wing too, and that's fairly common now.

The bigger concern for me is the injury risk that Byram has showed thus far. Cliche, but the best ability is availability. If he can stay healthy, this is a nice upgrade to the Sabres D corp. If he can't, it's likely a swing and miss.

From the Avs side, I agree with the takes above -- Mittelstadt is a nice addition as the 2C there. Think he will help them quite a bit.

If that is fact, then this trade makes much more sense for Buffalo.
