Full trade:
Pittsburgh trades Jake Guentzel (25% retained) and Ty Smith to Carolina in exchange for Michael Bunting, Ville Koivunen, Vasili Ponomarev, Cruz Lucius, Carolina’s 1st RD pick in 2024 (Conditional) and Carolina’s 5th RD pick in 2024 (Conditional).

Sources say the Penguins are hoping to have a trade in place for Jake Guentzel by tomorrow evening. Pittsburgh is open to quality over quantity in return, but would like a 1st, young NHL player, plus prospects. Flexibility comes in the calibre of prospect or roster player.

The expectation is that Guentzel will be dealt by the #pens as a rental. It doesn't sound like potential acquiring teams have shown much interest in trying to work out an extension as part of the trade.

Just putting it out there, Vegas plays at home Thursday (Canucks) and Saturday (Red Wings). Trade being done by tmo would have Guentzel in the Vegas lineup Thursday.

I agree Raty (meh) but Podkolzin and a 1st would be a hard pill to swallow for a rental. I don't know if Guentzal pushes us that far over the edge. I would rather buy a cheaper middle 6 winger for less.

I'm not convinced either of those guys can play in the league long term, and the 1st would be a late one so basically a middling-odds crap shoot too.

I could be wrong, but especially given Guentzel appears to be the top winger readily available and there are reportedly at least 2 other top teams in the West interested (Edmonton and Vegas), I'd be surprised if this ended up being the return that gets it done.

I don't know how Edmonton could fit him in. Some cap relief would have to occur.

They have roughly $2.3M in available cap. A roster player would have to go back and possibly some salary retention from Pittsburgh. It's totally doable but this really ties their hands doing anything else.

Wherever he lands, it'll be interesting to see how he is without Crosby. Yes, he'll probably skate with players who, at this moment in time, are equal to if not better than the Crosby of today, but he's never been apart from Crosby. My guess is he will do fine, as his IPPs have always been high, which is no small task when playing with Crosby.

Vegas gets Mantha for their RW, but I also don't think this writes off Guenztel to Vegas, but it does mean Vegas doesn't need to overpay for Jake.
