They have a ton of cap space with Hamilton on LTIR essentially until the playoffs.

I see. It was a decent theory until it wasn't. Someone wrote that the cost of the fourth rounder ended up being $280 000, which is less than I thought, and I agree, it doesn't say much about the intentions going forward. Not more than that NJ and Calgary may continue with some other deals.

    Great trade for Dallas.
Joe Pavelski (with Claude Giroux) has been my favourite player(s) of past 5-10 years.
THIS year, I want nothing more than for Pavelski to win a Stanley Cup with the Dallas Stars.

To open the season... I thought they had a really strong team - on paper.
Oettinger has emerged as a top 5 (top 10 at worst) NHL goalie.
The defense had a real D1 in Heiskanen... good vets... three lines deep at F... two solid D-pairings.

What I did not know (and many may not) is that Heiskanen was playing his "off-side" this year. (Commentators often cover this in the opening of a game or two... and if you miss that... you have to be pretty keen / do tons of reading to pick it up. LSS - I missed it.)
You have to be pretty deep into hockey to keep track of this stuff.
I grew up playing defense... and it can REALLY (Really!) make an enormous difference to D-pairings to have a player in his off-place.
(He'll tell you "it's fine"... but a lot of the time... "it's not").

    So... it's not just a Tanev-Add...
    It's also a Heiskanen-Boost.

    So this is great.
Dallas is looking like they are VERY serious now...
    Harley emerging
    Stankoven joining
Duchene having a major comeback year
I mean... if Seguin & Benn can give them half-their-cap value (sheesh!)

This team is going to be *tough*.
    Love it.

Can't say I know much about what's coming back to CGY.
But I can say... if this helps them slide in the standings... that might be a "win" in itself!
(It's something PHI failed to do last year... and got absolutely *lucky* that Michkov dropped to 7 in the draft)

Someone is going to facilitate the trade one way or another, might as well be your team if you have the cap space and rounding error amount of cash to buy draft picks.
One day I will quit fantasy hockey, today is not that day.

They've still got 8.6 M in cap space so they can still acquire pretty much whoever they want. And they don't care about Dallas getting stronger. I agree it is interesting though. I think the Devils should sell and get ready for next year since it's not happening this year.

Another reason Nill was GM of the year. To me that’s a cheap price to acquire a prototypical defensive defender that takes pressure of the D corps. Dallas is tinkering for the Cup and Tanev is the first piece. Nice D depth for Dallas, prime for a run.

I was actually kicking around the idea of trading Heiskanen a while back but him playing his offside and having to carry Suter is the reason I am hoping for his lackluster first half of the season. The PDOcast recently talked about how dominant the Heiskanen/Harley pair had been which was the major reason I pulled Heiskanen from any trade talks. Here's hoping Nil can retool the rest of the D corp this offseason by buying out Suter and upgrading their bottom pair so Heiskanen and Harley can be paired moving forward.
