What is Conroy thinking? This is a terrible deal for the Flames.

Seems like Calgary didn't get enough, but it was likely the best deal out there, so tough to criticize. A bit interesting that NJ decided to help out a SC contender. Kind of sends a message.

It was out there that he wanted a 2nd + and he got his asking price. I want to say I am surprised he didnt get a 1st for him but clearly no one was going to pay that or it would have happened. I am sure Conroy did his due diligence and circled back to other teams in the mix to give them one last crack but no one blinked. It would appear that the key piece they got back was Artem Grushnikov more than the pick itself, if you believe what you read about the trade. I dont know much about the kid other than he's a gritty Dman in the AHL and a former 2nd round pick. It seems he's a lot like Tanev in his style of play but that's what I am reading about him. Time will tell.

I agree. Maybe NJ just didn't want to let that cap space go to waste or that they have some more picks for trades.

..but giving up cap space like this, and strengthening Dallas, when they're still in 9th place? If it was uncertain before, it now gives a strong impression of giving up for the season and being a seller the coming week, doesn't it?

They traded their #1 center and Zadorov before this. They were 100% selling UFAs that didn't want to sign a deal before the trade deadline.

If we don't see Hanafin extend, he's 100% gone too.

Yes, true for Calgary, and a bit funny how similar situation theirs are to NJ, of which I'm arguing has shown they're in sell mode the upcoming week. Is it a reasonable assumption? I think it's good enough evidence but we'll see.

I don't think NJD are sell mode, I think they essentially just got involved in this trade to buy a 4th.

And I think fanbase wise allows a team like Calgary to retool and wave a white flag for half a year, whereas the Devils fanbase and ticket sales don't allow that. They need a competitive team, and if they sell off big pieces, they lose out on a lot.

Next week though, you might see Toffoli and Nosek moved for like nothing. Maybe the Devil's still want Markstrom, and this was a good grace to help out something with Markstrom this week. They apparently were in agreement on a trade but it fell apart on how much Calgary was going to retain.

I think 2014olymicgold might well be on to something. I had to wonder why the Devils would be a part of this deal, what's the motivation for NJ? Well, it makes perfect sense that the motivation is that this is a "gesture" to grease the tracks to acquire Markstrom before or at the deadline. We'll see.

I agree, it's solid reasoning, but not sure what the cap situation for Devils is. Does it make sense to take on cap salary for a 4th and move other, good pieces to fit Markström under the cap?
