One small error in Lawman's breakdown but it's a great read and this only change the numbers they listed and not their point.

The majority of Tavares' income is not earned in Canada. Players are paid per game and each game is earned in the province/state that the game is played in sp if CRA wants to rule the signing bonus as salary, this will greatly change the calculations.

Regardless of this, I doubt CRA wins this. They are once again just trying to change their own rules without changing their rules in order to get more money.

2 other points I failed to mention which may be argued by CRA:
- signing bonus is treated the same salary for cap purposes;
- signing bonus is subject to escrow just like salary.

Thus, CRA will argue, Tavares did not get the full amount and it is just another name for salary.

Also, apparently CRA is arguing that Tavares was a resident of Canada as of July 1, 2018 when he signed the contract. The season ended for Tavares in April and so the facts around WHEN he became a resident of Canada will be very important

- Was he house shopping or buying?
- When did he get a new driver's license, bank account, gym account etc.
Where was he physically living from April thru July 1st.

My guess is that it wasn't leaked but that the court case is on public record for anyone to find? Smarter people than me would know though.
