Gudas and Larsson Hits Down

Hey folks,

I just wanted to throw this out here and see if anyone might have an explanation. I drafted both these players with the expectation of more hits but they haven't been delivering as much as I might like.

For comparison:

Gudas - 2.8 hits down from three seasons in a row of around 4.5 hits
Larsson - 1.7 hits after seven seasons of around 2.5-3 hits per game

Is there any explanation here? Ice time and usage seem to be the same, is variation just the nature of hitters? Can these rates be expected to change at all?

This was posted a while ago. The current value is 35 hits/g, which is still down significantly.

I’m not a stats person, however it would seem the number of hits across the league have dropped while the number of blocked shots has gone up.

On a side note and a bit out of left field but did you use a code to scrape Frozen Tools for the data to build this chart in Excel?

If so would you mind sharing it?

That's a pretty shocking chart. Seems hard to believe that players and coaches across the league could all change their behavior so suddenly and significantly. Makes me wonder if some new directive was given to league stats keepers about what is and isn't counted as a hit. Not sure what would motivate that though.

This is the only possible answer. The league wouldn't swing this hard in one year without an outside force contributing. As an example, it took around 7 years for league-wide sciring to increase by 18%. I believe the highest single-season increase was around 6%.
