[EXTENSION] Nylander gets 8yrs

Darren Dreger said the Leafs are closing in on signing Nylander to an 8yr, $92m deal ($11.5m aav) and it's getting the bonuses and salary structure done. Will include a full NMC/NTC

It would be the largest deal in Maple Leafs history. It would also tie Karlsson for the 3rd highest contract in the 8yr max era (Behind MacKinnon and McDavid).

I remember the holdout over his current contract years ago, everyone thought he was so grossly overpaid at $6M per year... look at him now haha.

He's a stud, he's earned it. Hopefully he's not like these other flashy European players who ghost after signing a fat new contract.

What does this mean for Elias Petterson. Do you think this contract is the floor or the ceiling? IMO, bias included Petterson is a better player then Nylander but I am willing to listen to others on this.

RFA vs UFA. Hard to compare the contract negotiations, but the agent would point to the 3rd largest 8yr NHL deal signed and say that's something we want.

I am happy for Nylander, as I feel he deserves this contract simply based on production. That being said, I feel bad for the Leafs as they continue to burn the wagon on the front end and leave nothing for the back end. Not a recipe for a Stanley Cup winning team.

The unfortunate thing about the Leafs situation the last couple of years was they signed the guys to contracts expecting the cap to go up and it didn't. It's not like they never produced in the regular season to their contracts, every one of them you can argue performed to their paycheques. Now the unfortunate thing is, any defenseman on the market that would be involved in a Nylander/Marner type of trade, isn't moving the needle to the same extent as Nylander/Marner. No one wants to trade that big #1 d-man right? You can say "the Leafs need this" but if "this" isn't out there...it's unfortunate. Chychrun is probably the one guy moved recently that would have fit the Leafs needs, and I think the request was Knies.

But ya, the Leafs issues are the players that became stars in their system are all forwards. When drafting Marner, they didn't know they had Matthews the next yr and even who they would have picked instead of Marner would have been a player not near Marner's level. The only thing you could say is they signed Tavares when they didn't need him, but what would they do with that money is another "what if" issue. Too many "What if" scenarios in my opinion.

Treliving not letting Nylander and Matthews get close to free agency is something all Leaf fans would have wanted 6-8months ago.
