True. Hopefully, it won't catch on. It almost seems illegal. I mean, it's not even a shot.

What’s going to happen when a goalie gets smacked in the face with a stick one of these times?

Would that be considered "follow-through" of your shot? This is the rule:

A “high stick” is one which is carried above the height of the opponent’s shoulders. Players must be in control and responsible for their stick. However, a player is permitted accidental contact on an opponent if the act is committed as a normal windup or follow through of a shooting motion, or accidental contact on the opposing center who is bent over during the course of a face-off. A wild swing at a bouncing puck would not be considered a normal windup or follow through and any contact to an opponent above the height of the shoulders shall be penalized accordingly.

Interesting. I wonder if the NHL would consider this a 'normal windup' or 'follow through of a shooting motion'? I'd argue no, but that's just my opinion. Outside of high sticking, there's also slashing.

Don't totally disagree, but I still think that those "whip" sticks shouldn't be allowed. Should be like baseball and stick with wooden sticks. I "might" be a little old school in my thinking though, lol!

Just catching this... damn holidays - I almost missed it! Glad somebody made a thread.

    So far in NHL history:
    2019-10-29 Svechnikov
    2019-12-17 Svechnikov
    2020-12-14 F.Forsberg
    (2021-12-07 Zegras *assist* to Milano)
    2022-01-27 Zegras
    2022-04-01 Zegras
2023-03-24 Kent Johnson (*Johnson has pulled it off in BCHL, NCAA, Canada Juniors, AND NHL!!!)
    2023-12-23 Bedard

    Is that all of them?

(Forsberg's is my favourite - he pulled it off without "pressing" it for friction. Plus - it's something the kids practice... at practice... in their downtime between skills or with extra time. Forsberg is a dinosaur compared to the kids - so props to him.)

Crazy that it caught steam in the last 3-4 years.
The original was Mike Legg in an NCAA tournament game on March 24, 1996.

Personally I was a fan of the assist, because I don't think anyone saw that coming. much like the first time Legg did it.

Same night as Bedard, but no one is talking about that one because, you know, he's not Bedard.

    Oh neat.
What's amazing - for me - is that micro-second where the player gets the puck from flat-on-ice to onto-their-stick.
There's doing it with the 'press' (I call it, which is how skateboarders spring their boards up).
And there's this method where the player just somehow coaxes/glides it onto the flat of their blade. (which I understand even LESS!).

I've tried both... tens of times... and I have no effin idea how they do this.
I'd love to watch a physics tutorial on what's happening in that super-short-period.

I mean... does Zegras chisel his stick to some sort of ramp/wedge/slope?

^If one slows this down, this puck is gliding perfectly flat.
And it somehow seems to glide perfectly onto the 1/4" or 3/8" of the stick blade of Zegras.
Like... WTF. That's some magic shit right there.
