With the Oilers cap situation, unless there's an injury it seems like it'll need to be dollar in dollar out.

So you could use him to cap dump almost to get a better NHL ready player in. Like Broberg+Campbell for an upgrade in net.

However...wtf is Holland doing. Letting a player on his ELC, with 10gp this season and 79gp in his career talk to teams? I'm guessing it's to know what he wants on his next deal, but what? lol. I don't know, just seems lazy, or he's leaking info to make it seem like he's doing stuff again. The Oilers system has done stuff like that before.

He's not a "Veteran D" and it seems like that's what too many GM's value.

Campbell's contract may be hard to move, but perhaps Brown & Broberg for somebody better?

    They can, and realistically should.

Holland came out yesterday and said he has not given them permission to seek a trade so an interesting back and forth between the player/agent and team.

At the end of the day, the only way to look at this is the Oilers have pooched another top pick and their development. Very frustrating, especially when Holland came in with the background of letting prospects over-ripen before bringing them in. I really expected that to happen here as well but so far it's been one disappointment after another. I am seeing it with Holloway too.

Broberg needs to go down and play, mainly because he's not better than their top six right now and there's not a spot for him in Edmonton, so send him down and tell him to just play.

At the end of the day, they really cannot afford to trade him. If any of their top six gets hurt, he's their only real option as a fill-in replacement that they can trust coming up. The only trade potential is if they can get back a similar type of Dman as far as potential goes. Someone who they can send to the AHL and let them develop and be ready when needed. Bring up a plug to sit in the press-box each night and if an injury happens, swap out the plug for Broberg/traded in Dman.

It's also interesting that Broberg's agent called Holland out after Holland said he didn't grant him permission to talk to teams. I can't remember word for word what he said, but it was like "this just shows what we have to deal with when it comes to this management group. Nothing is straight forward".

At the end of the day, Broberg hasnt played well enough to force Holland's (and the coach's) hand to play him more. The left side of Nurse, Ekholm and Kulak is pretty well set and the 7th guy, usually Desharnais, is a different type of player than Broberg so it's not like you can take Vinny out and put Broberg in and expect the same things, and that's when the Oilers go 11 and 7, which they dont do often anyway.

Just send him to the AHL, tell him he needs to work on certain parts of his game that are holding him back and let him do just that. When an injury happens, if he's played well enough in the AHL, he will get brought back up. You cant send him down there, telling him he will be back if an injury occurs. Make him earn his recall.

Ya this is the thing that is confusing me about Broberg. Why aren't they just sending him down? Maybe there's a threat he'll leave for Europe if he gets moved to the AHL as it's a $700k+ pay difference.

This just shows how effed up the Oilers are.

The Flyers just sent Louie belpedio through waivers. He's older, shown out well as a bottom pair this guy year, is waivers eligible, and is on a minimum contract, or close. You claim a guy like this, have him be the #6-7 D, and develop Broberg.

This has got to be another symptom of the shifting of the management group to Jeff Jackson's leadership. Ken Holland was quite adamant this offseason that Broberg had to be playing big minutes in order to develop and my understanding was that they had a plan to be using him on the right side quite a bit to gain those minutes/experience and that if he couldn't hack it that he'd be in the minors getting big minutes instead. Then this season's early upheaval happened. Between the injuries to key players (especially Ekholm their most stable defenseman who could have been used to prop up a young defender like Broberg) and the defensive coverage/goaltending imploding to the point that they had to fire the coach (one who developed a lot of Edmonton's young talent) and bring in a new one who is going to have new favourites. The early upheaval probably took even more control out of Holland's hands in terms of roster decisions. Does he even have final say on moves any more? This is not how they've dealt with struggling young players in the past. More often it has resulted in a demotion (like Holloway yo-yo-ing up and down), or a continued push high in the lineup (like Puljujarvi's continued use in the top 6 before his eventual trade). It feels chaotic right now (probably because it is) but we can't really complain about a Broberg trade until we see the result. History says they'll be selling horribly low once again on a player who should be a key cheap contributor to a team with big aspirations. Watch them go out and trade for another former Jeff Jackson client. The power of nepotism and cronyism know no bounds with this franchise.
