Meh. He’s now probably the most tradeable goalie on the roster. Wonder if there’s an NMC/NTC. Wonder how Primeau feels about it. I guess the plan is dump Allen and wait for someone in the pipeline to emerge in the next few years?

This feels weird with MON having Allen signed through 2025.
Unless... some team has expressed interest in Allen (and that team is on Allen's small NTC list)

Maybe they'll finally explore a Jake Allen move? Come July 1st his MNTC goes from a 7team NTL to a 3team NTL.

There's not a whole lot of goalies available out there that's any better than what Montembeault offers, and at $3.15m, he can serve as a backup even if he doesn't turn out. But the Canadiens defense def needs to improve to help their goalies. You can have the best goalie in the league with their d-core right now and it wouldn't be amazing.

Prime Price would have been ok behind this D. Given Primeau’s play I’d say they’d be safe sending him down. I doubt he’d be claimed. Keep trying to trade Allen or Monty. They aren’t competing for anything anytime soon.

He's not in the league. And if that's the goal with defense (Price could do it), it's not great lol.

Demko, Bob, Oettinger, Shesterkin, or Vas wouldn't perform near they're ceiling behind this group.

Well duh. The goal is to build for the future. Average age of their D is 24 and old man Matheson at 29 is the oldest by 4 years. When Struble, Guhle, Barron, and Harris get two or three years on them it’s looking good. It’s a real stretch but I really like what Konyushkov is doing in the KHL as well. So where does that leave goalies at that point? With this contract it leaves them wide open. Thus my point on seeing if someone in the pipeline steps up. Like this kid Volokhin. Again, who the heck knows but his path is very strong. Anyway, I’d really like to see what trade protection, if any, Monty got.

I still think a team might claim Primeau. I wonder if they try to trade him now that they have their upside guy and their veteran locked up.

yes they have, I think this clears up who they have to trade now is what I mean. Not sure how much you get from Primeau though. Maybe they just let him go on waivers and deal with it if they lose him.

Yes. I really do think he’d clear. I also think with no trade protection , this reasonable contract, and his play since the world championships make Montembleaut the most attractive to other teams. Montreal is not competitive but they most likely should be when this deal is up. I don’t think Allen or Primeau will garner much more than a used puck bag at this point. Maybe a late pick. To me it makes the most sense to keep Montembleaut and see where he is in 3 years. He’ll be 30 with plenty of years left and they’ll know if he’s worth another deal or not. And they’ll have a much clearer picture of how the recent picks are looking.

It would be interesting if somebody wanted Montembault, but wanted him under contract moving forward before trading for him. Unsure that I'd be that specific as a GM. I think this paves they way for Allen to be gone, which should improve the goaltending situation.
