Some food for thought. Going back to 2010-11, there have been ten other instances of a rookie defenseman tallying 18+ PPPts:

Quinn Hughes, Cale Makar, Moritz Seider, Zach Werenski, Shayne Gostisbehere, Rasmus Dahiln, Will Butcher, Torey Krug, Cam Fowler, and P.K. Subban

So basically only one - Butcher - who flamed out. Of course past results don't dictate future outcomes, but a 5th round pick for someone who's also on this list seems worth of rolling the dice, especially if you're San Jose of all teams.

lol yeah makes no sense, that is why i think there is more to this than just hockey...

but in short term this maybe good for his owners as sharks really dont care if they give up 2 goals or 10 a game so he will play and probably QB that PP. Maybe in few years he will figure it out defensively at least enough to stay in the lineup. Offensively there is lots of talent there.

Yea I don't get this from the Minny end of it but who knows. I really like this move for the Sharks. They have all the time in the world to put him on that *cough* powerplay and see what he can do. Brian Leetch was a pretty bad defensive Dman early on in his career so let's give him a shot. (not that he will ever become half the Dman Leetch was, just saying).

Tony DeAngelo and Shane Gostibhere are still terrible defensive defenseman and are finding an important role on teams. It’ll be interesting to see how it goes. San Jose is so bad.

Spurgeon +32 and Addison -17... both played defense last year... both played on the Minnesota Wild... both played behind the same forwards... and in front of the same goalies... in the same games as each other.
And you don't think this difference in +/- tells you anything?!?!
There's a time & place for every stat... and apples-to-apples (MIN D-man to MIN D-man)... this is the best usage of it.


Addison is a terrible defensive defenseman.
I've watched... the numbers aren't wrong.
He's the NHL's next Cholowski.
His days are numbered.

I didn't like what I saw out of him last year - and that's before Evanson made a habit of healthy-scratching him.
Team #2 (or is it #3) is the "figure it out" or "bust" team for NHL prospects.
At some point - they're just Galchenyuks and it ain't gonna work anywhere.

Cholowski and Ryan Merkley... and maybe Ty Smith... and maybe Addison.

There's a very quickly growing list of average-height, solid offensively, late1st/2nd round drafted CHLers that couldn't hack the defense part of the NHL and seem slated as AHL lifers.

0.3 blocks per game...you don't see that from defensemen too often.

3 blocks tonight for Addison and the game isn't over. Then again, it may be the Oilers shooting the puck directly into Addison due to accuracy problems...
