I hope he can make it back and be the guy who gets the primary assist when Ovy breaks the record!
Even if he is a 4th line PP specialist at that point.

Seems pretty clear Backstrom is done with NHL hockey and is for all intents and purposes retired.
When his press release was sent out he carefully did not say "retired" because he is owed $9.2 million for 1.9 more seasons and retirement means no pay.
So yeah, he's done an will collect $18.4m and then have a retirement announcement.

Knit picky but his salary to finish is contract is:
2023-24: $5m signing bonus, $5m salary
2024-25: $6m signing bonus, $2m salary
So he could retire July 2nd 2024 and making $16m, and forfeit $2m in salary.
I get the push to try to play, and it's def what you want a player to do, but sucks he couldn't see this in the offseason and the team could have used that money. However, they can now be the money dump team for trades to get some assets.

He's had a great career. Sad to see it end like this. If Ovie gets the record, I was envisioning his main man Backstrom having the primary assist.
