Does anyone know what the bet was. If not NHL related I don't see the big deal.

A friend sent this to me.

So I do not know if this is photo-shopped or if it was a legit helmet sponsor for the Senators...

I do notice a lot of betting advertising on the boards.

EDIT - The picture wouldn't paste over, but I followed the link and its the picture that is used on the article for the Score for this news.

The NHL (and all sports leagues) taking money from gambling companies and not allowing their employees and players to not gamble on sports is not in any way hypocritical. It is insane to me that people can't understand this.

Companies all over the world have rules about certain things their employees can or can not do. Investment firms have rules on what employees can invest in based on proprietary knowledge even while having a financial relationship with those companies. Hell, most executives have rules about when and how they are allowed to buy and sell their own company stock for the same reasons. Professional sports having rules on sports gambling is no different.

If you want to be a professional athlete, don't gamble on sports. It's a pretty simple rule that should be painfully easy for these guys to follow. Hell, you can still gamble on anything else you want as long as it's not sports.

Ya I totally get it. A professional athlete may not have much influence on the results of other leagues or divisions and whatnot, but where do you draw the line? It's probably just easier to say "no betting on sports, period". It also removes the optics of what kind of collusion might be taking place and keeps the NHL's sparkling image, clean.

It does make me wonder though about things like betting on WWE matches. I think that is a thing; maybe not with the major sportsbooks, but I think there are sites where you can bet on professional wrestling matches. It does seems strange to even have that as a thing, considering I think that most understand that the match outcomes are scripted and planned. Think of the money involved there and the possible corruption.

Not a ton here but slowly going to get a trickle of info. "A betting partner flagged an issue here; there was a third party involved, it wasn't Shane Pinto himself betting; this was a very nuanced case that took a while to unravel" - Chris Johnston

Players who gamble know the risk, no matter how dumb it is. Pinto even knew the risk going through a bookie essentially.

It is bad on the league where they are suspending a player for sports gambling (not on their sport) based on a few months of investigation, but won't suspend players based on years of investigation around the 2018 Team Canada Rape.

The NHL profits from being exposed to betting sites, so it makes sense that they would want to promote those sites. NHL players have more influence over the sports community, so it ALSO makes sense that the NHL would not want their players betting on sporting events. Both of these things are reasonable. The fact that the NHL advertises sports booking sites, and that they prevent their players from betting on sporting events, is not the controversy that people are making it out to be.

Pinto is currently without an NHL Contract.

Would the NHL take that into consideration when determining the amount of games.

NHL players are not paid their salary during a suspension.
So the loss of the salary is an additional discipline for the players.

This additional discipline does not effect Pinto because there is no salary to be withheld.

i heard on Toronto radio station yesterday that some teams are pissed with the league cause this apparently helps Ottawa cap situation.

So what seems to have happened was:
    - Pinto has a legal sports gambling account through New York
    - He gave access to his account to someone in New York to make bets

He could have been playing in Ottawa, or posting on social media on vacation or something when this person was making bets in New York. What isn't specifically laid out is if the person made NHL bets. It just specifies that Pinto did not make NHL bets.

Not only is this actually a potential issue with sports, but I feel like this is illegal. But nothing from a legal aspect is being brought up right now.

This hurts Pinto financially and hurts Ottawa's cap. Nobody is getting away with anything. When Pinto signs his cap hit gets pro-rated, so the cap hit will be higher than the dollar figure he actually signs for. Pinto's salary will also be pro-rated, so he will get a percentage less than his actually contract. Each game that passes increases the cap hit of Pinto's contract.

So with all that said... when the 41 games is up, Pinto is likely not getting a contract for this year?
