Shane Pinto contract situation/suspended for sports betting

Am told the #Sens have rescinded all previous offers and Pinto may have to sign his QO to officially begin serving the suspension.

I would fully expect that Pinto would be suspended for a similar time-frame.

excuse my ignorance but what are the rules against betting? you cant bet on the sport you play? any sport? or is it just you cant bet on your team? anybody knows what it is?

either way, im sure he knew he was braking the rules so dumb on his part..specially without contract.

He did himself real good with that move. Now he either has to take a league minimum contract or hope some other team will give him a pass halfway through the season.

If he would have made the exact same online bet after he left the facility and in the safety of his car, or even in the parking lot of the team facility, then he would not have been suspended

It is an interesting question. If I am an NHL player, am I allowed to make a 20 dollar bet with a childhood friend of mine as to when I will score my first goal? At the end of the day, that's not the kind of thing they are looking to prevent, but where is the line drawn? It also is really obvious why you wouldn't want to be allowed to bet against your team as it brings up the possibility of throwing games. But if I bet that my team will beat your team, they don't want me to try harder because of that bet?

I guess there is is the possibility of collusion with others involved in the game that professional athletes may have some influence of. They also may have more intimate knowledge of the personal lives of the players who really could influence game results. If I am a NHL player and I find out that star player Joe Blow just received news that his daughter was just diagnosed with some horrible disease, well he might not be on his best game tonight. Let's bet against. It might just be easier to ban betting altogether.

That is specifically a rule in the NFL. The parking lot comment is, as I understand it, somewhat wrong. If he placed the bet from his car in the parking lot, fine, as that his personal space. While waling in the parking lot, not fine, as that's the team facility. Note that you'd need some really great video cameras to capture the difference. Cell phone GPS is not that exact.

Many sports have had anti-gambling rules regarding on your own team or sport. The real issue is that most sports have anti-betting rules, but they are now fully in league with casinos. Daily fantasy was a stepping stone to this problem, as it was very thinly veiled sports betting to begin with.

Can't ban betting anymore with casinos, many that were "daily fantasy" companies not gambling companies now involved and licensed. Pete Rose has been banned from baseball for gambling for a long time, and the issue is what he was betting on, nowadays it would be much, much easier to prove the bets.

The bet with a friend would probably never be made public, but it would be best if that bet was made before one reached the NHL.
