Mad respect for Travis Dermott using the tape when the "ban" was in effect.
It's easy to say you're disappointed, much harder to be the first guy to stick your neck out, especially when he is not an established player.

That's great. I thought it was a terrible move by the NHL to initially ban a very small pro-LGBTQ symbol. And I agree about Travis Dermott.

We all had a feeling that they weren't actually going to punish people who decided to do it.

It should be "if you want to participate you can, no one is forced to". Warmup jerseys in whatever the event night is should be if you choose too. The NHL is afraid of the optics of having 1-3 players not wearing a Pride jersey, but the route they chose to have no representation on ice was way worse.

Head shake at the NHL though. I don't know what's worse, making the original decision, or completely folding to a guy who plays in Arizona on a 2way deal. Either they are dumb, or knew their rule was dumb.

So are the players allowed to use that tape during the game, or just during warmups? Social issue aside, striped anything during game action I could see being fairly distracting for the refs or players trying to follow the puck. Wonder if that was the initial rationale?

Rule 10.1 in the NHL rulebook:

10.1 Player’s Stick – (see 10.2 for goalkeeper) The sticks shall be made of wood or other material approved by the League, and must not have any projections. Adhesive tape of any color may be wrapped around the stick at any place for the purpose of reinforcement or to improve control of the puck.

Yes... I was wondering if they were trying to set a precedent for some other scenario they imagined happening.

I wonder what the reactions would be if a Russian player decided to use Russian Flag hockey stick tape now.

The NHL said they would ban the use of stick tape to support social causes. So it was even a dumbly written rule because what would the NHL do if you took purple, blue, green, yellow, orange, and red tape and made your own. It was just doomed to fail from the beginning and the NHL just hoped their employees would do what they were told (like in the past), but these players are more open to the idea that they are more than just players.

What is interesting tho, they haven't mentioned anything about jerseys and other equipment, which is still technically banned. So if a player decided to wear pride skates during warmup, that's still technically banned. But tape is now legal.

Dermott used pride tape very often on the shaft of the stick not just on Pride nights. It's typically just a small amount showing like in the Arizona vs Ducks game.

During warmups on pride nights, players have sticks with Pride tape on the handle and blade often, then the sticks get auctioned off. No player has used "social cause tape" on the blades during a game though (maybe there's 1 from a while ago that I can't remember though).

I am still curious what there reasons were... I am sure they had a sophisticated reason for trying this.
