Default 2023/2024 Rocky Horror Roto Show - Spooky Season #13

Welcome all to the spookiest season yet of the Rocky Horror Roto Show. As we enter into our 13th year, we say goodbye to our founder and the only commish this league has ever known as horrorfan has decided to hang up the mask. Thank you for bringing us all together and for 12 years of bloody fun and competitiveness.

With our longtime commissioner leaving, that opened up a spot and we would like to welcome a well-known forum member in duntroon68 to the show. No doubt he will bring a competitive edge from his time in the Dobber tiered leagues.

Default Re: 2023/2024 Rocky Horror Roto Show - Spooky Season #13

I'll jump in with my personal draft analysis:

New team name for this season: JasonX(hekaj)
Jason (Robertson) was my 1stround pick (12th) while Arber Xhekaj was my 22ndround pick. Always a bit of a risk using a late-drafted guy as Idon't like to upset the fantasy gods by trading/waiving any guys whomake up my team name!

Overall I was pretty pleased with howthe draft went this year. In this league, you HAVE to expect gettingmultiple guys sniped on you each round... which also (for me) meansshifting strategy on the fly.

    Round 1: J.Robertson
He was in my top 11 so happy he slid aspot. Doesn't help with FOW but J.Hughes went right before this pickand I'm hopeful his other cats help him retain value here.

    R2: C.Makar
I had intended to go with a differentplayer here, but decided at the last second to take a risk withMakar. His health is the x-factor... but if he can play 75 games I'llgladly take PPG from the D slot.

    R3: A.Barkov
I was hoping one of my C targets mightfall to here and it turned out that multiple ones did. While Barkovdoesn't add much in the grit cats, he's really solid across the rest.

    R4: I.Samsonov
First major deviation as I intended tofade goalies (and D) but he was the last in that tier and Ihoped/planned to grab J.Woll later (which did not work out). Thinkthe Leafs will be strong again this year and if he stays healthy, should be decent value at this slot.

    R5/6: S.Aho/J.Eichel
I definitely wasn't planning ondrafting 3 straight C's in the first 6 rounds but felt like the valuehere was too good to pass up. After already going off script forSamsonov... might as well commit to a full blown improv production!

    R7: D.Nurse
Feeling like I have to start findingsome grit after missing out on the multi-cat guys in the earlyrounds. Should provide adequate value here and keep me fromscrambling for peripherals later in the draft.

    R8: P.Laine
A bit of a reach pick but missed out onthe high-end Rws and hoping he'll offer some FOW from the W withdecent scoring. If he has a good year, I'll meet the value. If not, this one may cost me.

    R9: J.Huberdeau
I was sweating down to this pick asJ.Gaudreau had already gone and I really wanted to find somepotentially strong value here. Hubs is a bit of a trendy “value”pick but I'm happy to land him here.

    R10: A.Hill
Wasn't my first choice but my G queuegot killed in between my picks so hoped I'd get him here and be ableto handcuff with L.Thompson next round (but 4T2 snagged him 2 pickslater). Still, between him and Samsonov, I'm liking my shot atcompeting in Ws and hopefully neither submarine my ratios.

    R11: D.Doughty
Maybe my fave value pick as he stoodout like a sore thumb on my list as the only left in his tier forquite a while.

    R12: T.Jeannot
I actually was targeting T.Wilson tofill this role earlier but again 4T2 took him before me. I will saythat in this league, if Jeannot comes even close to his 2021 levelshe'll provide awesome value here. If not, he's still helping tobalance out my cats a little bit.

    R13/14: P.Copley/C.Talbot
Guys simply killed my list betweenpicks and I was double-guessing my Jeannot pick when I missed out onR.Hartman making it back here. That will cost me in FOW and he likelyhad enough HIT/PIM to make him more valuable than Jeannot. Ah well.As for these picks, with my other guys all of the board, I decided tolock up the 82gps from LA. Had my eye on using my back-to-back pickson a few tandems and this was the only one that came to fruition.

    R15: R.O'Reilly
After committing early to Cs I waswilling to wait until this tier and it was time to pull the trigger.Think his poor season last year crushed his value and I expect him tobe better this year while adding elite FOWs for a NSH team thatdoesn't have a ton of C-depth.

    R16: P.Kane
This was right about where I waswilling to take a shot on an injured guy like Kane. Tons ofuncertainty but it won't kill my draft if he doesn't come back in agood situation/at full health. Flip side is if he does land in agreat spot, I can count on a scoring boost for the rest of theseason.

    R17: J.Sanderson
Most of the D that I was hoping forwere all gone here, but Sanderson could offer sneaky value here.Obviously if he's PP1 this might be a homerun, but even if not, aslong as he progresses (which is never certain with sophomores) heshould return value. Needed another D at this point too.

    R18: M.Pacioretty
Honestly this might be a throw-awaypick but at this stage, the risk is worth reward. Helps in a coupleof cats I need if he's even close to his former self.

    R19/20: R.Ristolainen/T.Krug
Just filling out my D-corps here with ablend of grit and potential PP help. Both might be anchors in +/- soI'll have to play it by ear with them.

R21: A.Lafreniere – Was reallyhoping for him here. Offense is a gamble but at minimum he's offeringsome hits.
R22: A.Xhekaj – Nearly tookhim over T.Krug and now part of the team namesake. Not sure if he'llstick or not but good rate stats for grit if he does.
R23: C.Coyle – A bit ofprotection for my Cs if one goes down to injury
R24: C.Addison – A bit ofprotection if Krug sucks again
    R25: S.Montembeault – A bit ofprotection if I lose a G to injury

    Overall Draft Grade: A-
While I missed getting a few of mytargets I'm still happy with the balance that came out in the end. Iam banking a LOT on guys staying/getting healthy and if that doesn'thappen I won't be near the podium. But if it does, I'm happy with thefoundational pieces and with the #1 waiver, my enjoyment of tradingand using the wire... I think I can at minimum be a pain in the assto everyone this year.

And let's be real – the quality ofGMs in this league is second-to-none... so just exiting the draftwith a notion that you can compete is a win in my books.

Here's to a great season lads!

“Dear McDavid” Draft Post Mortem - Shoeless

Preamble: I went intio the draft committed to Zero G and as you will see, I followed through - taking my first goalie in round 13. I did better than I expected with goalies, landing Levi, Knight. Wolfe and Hofer. It’s a dice roll – hoping for 7’s. Beyond that, my priorities were D, RW and dual eligible FOWing wingers, plus goals, shots and hits.
Round 1 – McDavid - in prepping for the draft, I concluded I am not a fan of drafting 1st.. but, okay, if I have to.

Rounds 2 & 3 (b2b) – Wanted Miller and hoped Stutle might drop for those elusive FOW from the wing. Ha, not even close. Meier and Bouchard were reaches but I wanted a piece of Jack Hughes and Bouxchard’s upside and stacked with McDavid were deciding factors. Svechnikov seemed too reachy but considered him and he went 2 picks later. Similarly Seider and Hamilton were considerations but I thought one or both might be there in round 4. Again they were gone well before my next pick. Scott getting Petterson at pick 35 was a gift from the hockey god – oofta. How did I overlook Petterson and Thompson – situational unawareness aka nose in draft plan only. 

Rounds 4 &5 – Pete sniped Heiskanen which spooked me to take 2 D here – Carlson and Jones. Not so sure on Jones but these could be value picks. Gives me a piece of Ovie and Bedard – and although I didn’t know it yet – a stack with Kuznetsov. Kuzie needs to go big or shut up this year. I had hoped for Hamilton and Seider here, but there is no free lunch in this league – Not super happy at this point but felt in control of that which I could control – lots of forward depth still out there. Alex getting Tage at pick 40 was huge value. Pete taking Erksson-Ek and Teemu getting Boldy were value picks in RD 5. Wedgy auto-drafted Trocheck – GONG!

Rounds 6 & 7: - Queued up Giroux, Connor and Nylander – all gone! Ended up with Keller and DeBrincat – both dual eligible on the wings and decent upside, I’m fine. But they felt like vanilla picks. Ma took the supr rookie about where most had him ranked – could pay nice dividends.

Rounds 8 & 9: - Time to start taking each pick to value town. Quentin started round 8 taking Laine – ah shit it’s really game on, but things settled down and was happy to get Johnny Hockey at the end of the round. Rebound? I think so if Werenski and Laine stay healthy and Fantilli steps up – I am good getting Gaudreau this late for sure. A point per game from Kyrou will validate my taking him here. Both picks feel like top 100 guys. Quentin scored big with Laine and Huberdeau in these rouns. I really like the Konecny pick as well.

Rounds 10 & 11: - Pete sniped me again in round 11 taking Werenski, so plan B was Theodore. I feel like he might do much better this year than last. I have 4 D now so time to get another RW. Caufield it is, sitting there in the round I had him penciled in at. Nothing big here but more importantly not mistakes here. Pete won the round with Werenski. I like the Forsberg, Schenn and Bennett picks in round 11. Heading next to taking a goalie finally and wondering if there is anything left worth mentioning. I quickly looked back at my draft to this point and I remember thinking “not bad!”

Rounds 12 & 13: - As more D guys were taken in Round 12, I decided to take Matheson and only 1 goalie at this turn. Levi was there and I am intrigued enough to take him. Happy enough with these two picks. One of the ideas behind Zero G is you plan to work the waiver wire because you can and aren’t overly invested in your goalie selections. My draft to this point has rolled out pretty much as I planned. Fade G and dedicated C, take DS and wingers early and often. I like the Barzal pick in 12 and the Tarasenko pick in 13. This the point in drafts were you start finding out how prepped managers are for the draft – I’d say this is the most prepped I was in the 13 seasons for this league and it looks like others were too.

Rounds 14 & 15 – Half way home, time to grind. Planning on taking a goalie and a skater for the next 3 rounds. Hoping to land back-ups with good ratios normally. First up is Knight – guys with OCD hate itr when goals mess up their net and Bobber has Fail written on his forehead. Troy Terry is pegged to have a good season, so at pick 168, he feels like a value town dude. I like Teemu’s pick of Ehlers in 14 and Quentin’s selection of ROR in 15 – FOW baby!

Rounds 16 & 17: - I took the Wolfman in 16 – 2x the AHL tendy of the year – what’s not to like? I need centers and Haydon was my next ranked one, so I took him and probably missed someone good. Now I have the Keller Haydon stack which might be alright. Mike’s pick of Thomas in round 16 was sneaky good as was Quentin’s Pat Kane swipe.

Rounds 18 & 19: - Hofer gawd sake get Binnington out of there - I like this swing for the fence – time will tell. I have been watching Jarvis drop and it’s time for the kid to make good on his pedigree. Aho, Aho, it’s off to work he goes. That’s a 4th goalie, which is enough.

Rounds 20 & 21: - I need a D and don’t want Vrana to slide anymore. So it’s Mr. Concussion, Bowen Byram and Vrana – taking risks this late are recommended. That’s a 6th D, also enough for now. Got a couple of D headed for IR+, so will use waivers to get a couple of replacement D.

Rounds 22 & 23: - Centers are the need – and Kuzmenko needs to put up and shut up – Elliot Freidman said so in a recent 32 thoughts, so definitely worth laying down a little coin on him. Backstrom might elbow him aside, but in round 22 it’s affordable risk. Thomas Novak looks like he is picking up where he finished off last year – which was bloody hot – can he keep it up? Let’s find out.

Rounds 24 & 25: - For my last 2 picks I took flyers on Sharangovich and Kotkaniemi because I like spelling bees. Both intrigue me with their upside, maybe this is the year.

Generally, I am happy with my draft, especially because guys in this league know player values and take guys when they should including reaching. Now I have to figure out my weaknesses and how to fix them. I’m guessing FOW, PIMs and Blocks for skaters and wins and Saves for goalies. Ugh, that’s a lot of cats, but I have a guy who Brings de cats, so maybe okay.

Just a great group to compete with. I appreciate y’all.

Sraft Grade B+: Can't be an A when I didn't take Pettersen or Tage Thompson in Round 3.

    C: McDavid, Novak, Kotkaniemi, Kuznetsov
    LW: Meier, Keller, DeBrincat, Gaudreau
    RW: Caufield, Jarvis, Kyrou, Terry
D: Bouchard, Carlson, Theodore, Byram, Matheson, S. Jones
    G: Levi, Hofer
B: Wolf, Knight, Haydon (C), Vrana, Sharangovich

Default Re: 2023/2024 Rocky Horror Roto Show - Spooky Season #13

Well, I can honestly say that I’ve never been in a draft that started at 9 a.m. before. I came down with a cold/flu on Friday and am still under the weather, which combined with my lack of alcohol, will be used as an excuse if I have a poor season.

Holding the eighth pick in a 12 team draft isn’t the greatest spot to be in. I was hoping one of my top 7 would make it to me and from there, I would use my tried and true “wing it” stragedy (one part strategy, one part tragedy).

1(8)-G-Shesterkin NYR – My seventh ranked guy fell to me when Rantanen was picked at seven. Rantanen was a fine pick (I had him at 8 on my list), but I wanted a stud goalie and got the one I wanted

2(17)-D-Dahlin BUF – Was kinda hoping Crosby would fall to me, but he went with the pick in front of me. Almost took J.T. Miller for his multi-category goodness including face-off wins from the wing, but couldn’t pass up on my top ranked defenseman

3(32)-D-Seider DET – Would have taken Sorokin or Hellebuyck if they fell to me and I had Zibanejad all lined up, but again, taken with the pick right before mine. Ol’ Mo will give me a ton of hits and blocks to go along with his 50 points or so

4(41)-C-Tavares TOR – Going old school (yes that’s an age joke) and couldn’t pass up the face-off wins and a surprising number of hits to go with his point per game numbers

5(56)-G-Ullmark BOS – With no other names screaming “take me”, I decided to take a chance and hope that the Bruins won’t be as bad as many (including me) think they could be

6(65)-C/L-Dubois,PL LA – Wanted Eichel or Morrissey, but they went a few picks ahead of mine. PLD was at the top of my center list

7(80)-L-Fiala LA – Taking stock of my draft so far, 2 G, 2 D, 2 C, so was looking to start filling out my wings. Might have taken Letang, Hedman, Pavelski (C/R) or Kempe (C/R) if they were available

8(89)-D-Hughes,Q VAN – Probably would have taken Nurse due to his inherent multi-catness, but he was taken with the last pick of round 7. Nice consolation with Hughes, although he doesn’t off much in the way of peripherals, but will give me lots of points and power play points

9(104)-C-Kopitar LA – Was hoping Evander Kane or Konecny would fall, but alas, ended up taking another old warrior, who will contribute bigly in face-off wins, while not being a drag in other categories

10(113)-C-Kadri CGY – Really bummed about having Jamie Benn taken right in front of me and would have taken Scheifele, but he went two picks before Benn. Hoping for a bit of a bounce back, but he should contribute in face-off wins, hits and power play points

11(128)-C/L-Schenn,B STL – Would have taken Devon Toews, but you guessed it, he was taken with the pick right before mine. Was getting nervous about my wing positions, so getting a guy who contributes face-off wins from the port side, hits and strike for 60—65 points is decent

12(137)-L/R-Bratt,J NJ – Alright, 11 rounds gone and I still don’t have a single (don’t have any married either) right wing on my roster. Forget peripherals, I’ll settle for 30 goals and a point per game from pick 137

13(152)-C/L-Barbashev VGK – Really was hoping Cozens would make it to my pick, but he went 3 picks after my 12th round pick. Barbie scored at a 57 point pace with Vegas and lined up mostly with Eichel and Marchessault and contributes nicely with hits

14(161)-C/R-Mercer NJ – Highest right wing on my list. Here’s hoping he shows some growth on a very good offensive Devils squad

15(176)-L/R-Crouse ARZ – At this point in the draft, I’m getting sniped by the clown to the left of me and the joker to the right. Wanted Perron, settled for multi-cat Crouse

16(185)-L-Bunting CAR – Liked the Arvidsson pick taken 3 picks after my round 15 pick and the Patrick Kane pick was perfect timing. Was looking at Bunting’s penalty minutes, hits and hope he can find some chemistry in the Canes top six

17(200)-D-Larsson,A SEA – Had a hard time deciding between Larsson and K’Andre Miller, but the much higher number of hits and blocks outweighed the 10 point or so difference. Nice to see Miller taken with the very next pick

18(209)-L/R-DeBrusk BOS – Okay, now it’s getting personal. Had Tyler Seguin all queued up to slot into my right side, but yeah, the pick right in front of mine again. I don’t think Louie’s kid can repeat the season he had, but if he can stay healthy, he should be a decent contributor

19(224)-L-Lee,A NYI – Almost took Zegras with my last pick and was hoping to snag him with my next pick (needed wing more than center), but he was taken right after my pick. Lee will contribute to multiple categories

20(233)-C/R-Duchene DAL – Likely would have taken either Ristolainen or Provorov, but in hindsight, Duchene might be the better pick for my team considering plus/minus is one of our categories

21(248)-L/R-Mangiapane CGY – Wanted Wheeler, settled for Mangy Pain. Should contribute in hits while having a bounce back season

22(257)-D-Valimaki ARZ – Only have four defensemen, so took my top available defender on my list. Hoping for 40 points, 120 hits and a smattering of power play points

23(272)-D-Fehervary WSH – With top blueline offensive talent in Dahlin, Seider and Hughes, I went with a two category stuffer, who might hit for 20 points. Not ideal to round out my defence corps, may have to address this early in the season

24(281)-L/R-Foligno,M MIN – Banger good for about 30 points who should hit the century mark in penalty minutes, something that is in serious decline in the NHL

25(296)-C-McBain,J ARZ – Was going to take Mattias Ekholm, but, big surprise, he was taken earlier in the final round. Hope to get 30 points, 60-65 penalty minutes, 300 hits and a bunch (375) of face-off wins

    C-Tavares, Kopitar, Kadri, B.Schenn
    L-Dubois, Fiala, Barbashev, Bunting
    R-Bratt, Mercer, Crouse, DeBrusk
    D-Dahlin, Seider, Q.Hughes, A.Larsson, Valimaki, Fehervary
    G-Shesterkin, Ullmark
    B-A.Lee, Duchene, Mangiapane, M.Foligno, J.McBain

Overall, I don’t hate my team. Maybe there was too much focus on face-off wins, hits, blocks, penalty minutes instead of actual points, but we’ll see. After the first eight rounds, I thought I’d be going old Comish and be all in on the top defensemen, but hope that I struck the right balance in filling out my wings over the final three defence spots. I’ll leave the grading to the teachers in this group (of which there are many) and wish everyone good luck this season!!

Default Re: 2023/2024 Rocky Horror Roto Show - Spooky Season #13

    EB TBD

Went into the draft wanting a few more FOWs than next year. I usually fade goalies a bit, but I don't like waiting too long at least for my first few DMen. Cs I was happy to wait on, and wanted a W/D with my first pick. Also ended up doing 90% of the draft while on a walk and at the park with my kid and (tolerant) wife.

    1-9: Pastrnak
Was #8 on my list, with Makar #9, and I was hoping Makar or Stutzle would slip to my second round pick. No-dice, but the benefit of the guys you expect to slip getting taken is guys you don't expect to be there are popping up. Not huge on Pasta, but he's elite when at his best, and the shot volume mixed with everything else is great. Getting a RW was gravy too as that to me looked like the shallowest position.

    2-16: Sidney Crosby
I don't think I've owned Crosby in a number of years, but I'm excited to again with Pittsburgh looking like a much better team than last year. Tons of points & faceoffs, and not really a weak category either. Can't be punting categories this early.

    3-33: Sergachev
With the top few Dmen off the board, and a bunch of Cs sliding, I decided to grab my #3 ranked Dman, and then see who of the higher-ranked Cs I had would slide.

    4-40: Thomspon
Getting Thompson here was a coup. I think I had him ranked in the 15-18 range. The shot volume for him and Pasta is going to be very easy to work around moving forward. Not an ideal number of FOWs, but I wanted to get a few Ws to make that up anyways.

    5-57: Jarry
Was hoping that Nuge would keep sliding, but when he went I pivoted to a goalie because there wasn't anyone else I would have been upset to miss at that point. Getting one of the last good volume goalies at this point felt like a bargain.

    6-64: Giroux
Had my eyes on Eichel, Morrissey, and Marchand, but they all went the three picks ahead of me, so I settled for 75pts, a bunch of PPPs, and a ton of FOWs from my RW2 slot. Happy to be filling the RWs early. Was hoping Dubois would then slip 17 picks to my next spot. He went the very next pick. I should know better.

    7-81: Malkin
Was debating between Malkin and Guentzel, and thought that with the injury the latter might slip to my next pick. Ah well. Again relying on a PIT bounce back with three of my first seven picks being from Dubas' new team, I'm hoping it pays off. Liking where I'm at so far, but getting a little nervous about D#2.

    8-88: Hyman
Wasn't in love with any of the D options left, so I went with a winger that added some peripherals, and hopefully rides on McDavid's coattails all year.

    9-105: Dunn
If I had picked a Dman at the last pick it would have been Dunn, and he slipped all the way here (maybe that says that I'm too high on him?). Anyways, not bad for a #2 with scoring upside and solid peripherals. I really like all of my defencemen to load up on the gritty stats, so there's no way I was picking Q. Hughes for example. Just personal preference.

    10-112: Benn
Was hoping Huberdeau would slide one more, but alas, I'll settle for more peripherals than scoring. Hoping the Bennessance lasts one more year, but at this stage in the draft it's not a league-losing pick if you miss.

    11-129: Andersson
With Chychrun/Werenski/Montour/Theodore all off the board, I took someone who has at least some similar PPP upside and good peripherals. The overall CGY rebound should help too.

    12-136: Grubauer
I was sure I was going to end up with Markstrom somewhere, but alas he went a little earlier. I saw Raanta go and figured I wanted to get maybe the last available volume starter on a playoff team. Solid value for this point in the draft, and at this point I'm thinking that between Grubs and Jarry I should be able to manage 110 starts, which means one more 50+ starter, or two more goalies overall could account for almost all of my starts.

    13-153: Nichushkin
Was really bummed to see a few names like Buch, Toffoli, and Necas go. This was maybe the run where my queue got the most decimated between picks. Nichushkin has some great upside if he's healthy, and if not then I'll find a replacement off of the wire. Have 4/4 RWs by this point too which has me feeling happy, thoguh there's some flexibilty to move some to LW too which is light for me at the moment.

    14-160: Bertuzzi
Top-line on the Leafs, with something to prove? Yes please! Was surprised Domi went before Bert too.
Had also just added Copley and Talbot to my queue because if they were both there at my next set of picks I could wrap up my goaltending - then they immediately get taken at the turn.

    15-177: Vejmelka
Solid goalie run, though Husso was the only one I was really looking at above Vejjie here. I like the save and Sv% numbers, and I think ARZ is going to be a better team this year. Hopefully 50+ starts out of him and 22+ wins.

    16-184: Forsling
Really needing D at this point, with three slots still to fill. Trying to blend some scoring upside with peripheral floors. Forsling might have the PP job to start. If not he could still get 40-points with peripherals.

    17-201: K. Miller
Rielly, Pionk, and Hughes go, so I tab one of my favourite players in K'Andre Miller, who just seems to get exponentially better as he plays more games. One year Fox will get injuredand Miller will top 65 points to go with 400+ combined hits, shots and blocks.

    18-208: Seguin
Happy to leave my last D to closer to the end now, so I grabbed another RW in Seguin, whose floor is probably last year's 45 points, with some decent SOG and FOW totals. Hopefully my Benn/Seguin tandem brings some great +/- too.

    19-225: C. Brown
Swing for the fences here with possibly having both of McDavid's wingers locked up, and another RW too boot. Not sure exactly what to expect for ice time and peripherals, but I can take the risk here. Was hoping Jeff Petry was going to be my 6th Dman (I love his cross-category production), but I waited too long and he went last round.

    20-232: Binnington
I hate the pick, but goalies are voodoo, and who really knows. If he rides my bench for the first month that's fine. If he's halfway reliable, then great. Probably the last guy left that could be decent in 60-starts. In hindsight, probably should have taken Orlov.

    21-249: Cooley
Didn't have much time or focus here to make the pick, so went for a home run swing. Better than most safe picks as this point, because if they hit, it's great, if they miss, the guy I could have selected is the same as the waiver wire anyways.

    22-256: Wedgewood
Figured grabbing one of the better ratio backups left might help counteract some of my volume goalies. And better return if the starter gets injured here.

    23-273: Drysdale
Was running out of D options, so I took a swing.

    24-280: Danault
To push Cooley to the bench for now, a higher floor guy with a ton of FOWs. Hopefully adding Dubois doesn't hurt him too much.

    25-297: Graves
To push Drysdale to the bench, and hopefully pick up some peripherals and secondary assists alongside Erik Karlsson.

Overall, very happy with my draft. Feel I got value on just about every pick in the top-100, took some swings after that, didn't punt a category or a position, and I think with some proper management and a bit of luck, I'll definitely be above last-season's finish of tied for 6th.

This was my first time ever drafting from my phone as I had to be at the rink for my 8-year-old’s first hockey practice of the year. The draft system on the phone was surprisingly great. I was a little more distracted than I would like to be when drafting with this group, but I put more effort into pre-ranking this year and I believe it paid off.

    Round 1 (10) – Nikita Kucherov
I had really expected to be choosing between Rantanen and taking the first goalie off the board with this slot. But they went 7 and 8. Of course EskimoBrother was gifted Pasta at 9 but I’ll gladly take Kuch in the 10 slot especially with RW being so shallow this year.

    Round 2 (15) – Jake Oettinger
I wasn’t going to take a goalie here. I was really considering JT Miller, but the more I thought about it, I didn’t want to wait 19 picks for my first goalie. I’m glad I didn’t as I would have had to settle for a Vanececk, Samsonov or injured Vasilevsky.

    Round 3 (34) – Adam Fox
One of the best offensive D-men in the league but low SOG/Hits. I didn’t realize how low his SOG were or I may have went with Hamilton here as I was back and forth on the two. Strongly considered EP as well but really wanted to get some good D early as C is so deep.

    Round 4 (39) – Dougie Hamilton
Considered taking a second goalie here but the guys I was looking at went right before this pick. Was surprised to see Tage Thompson still around (he went one pick later) as I figured someone would be buying the hype. But it was roughly where I had him ranked. Dougie makes up for some of the SOG that Fox lacks too and gives me a pretty solid D base to build around.

    Round 5 (58) – Brayden Point
Ullmark was still on the board until 2 picks before and I was leaning that way. I had Point/Eichel/Marchand in the queue for a bit. Point just seemed to be the one who was falling, and I didn’t think he’d fall back to me 5 picks later.

    Round 6 (63) – Brad Marchand
#63 at #63… I’ll take it. Yes, he’s older and yes he’s playing without Bergeron. But he still drives the play, has scored over 100pts in a season and is on a PP with Pastrnak and McAvoy. Plus he’s over a year removed from the hip surgery. Could be a steal at this point in the draft.

    Round 7 (82) – Jake Guentzel
I’ve wanted to draft Guentzel specifically for my team name for probably 4 or 5 seasons now but his draft position never worked well with my draft slot. I had thought about targeting him for Round 6 but felt that would be reaching and couldn’t the way the draft panned out. But at this stage I think he’s fair value if he doesn’t miss much time.

    Round 8 (87) – Stuart Skinner
I had a couple of banger wingers in my queue and Jacob Trouba. But when I started looking at the goalies left on the board, Skinner jumped out since he should rack up the Ws on the Oilers.

    Round 9 (106) – Tom Wilson
E Kane and Trouba went since my last pick, so I knew I couldn’t wait on Wilson much longer. Dobber’s new banger focused roto rankings has Wilson at #18. While I feel that’s a little high, I still think he’s an absolute steal since I’ve been eyeing him since round 6. My favorite snag of the draft so far.

    Round 10 (111) – Logan Thompson
YzermansLegacy took Adin Hill 2 picks before this. Personally I think Thompson ends up with a slight edge in games played in the Vegas net so I figured this was the time to snag him. That gives me goalie son 3 of the top 4 teams in the west. Benn (EskimoBrother) and Korpisalo (PenguinHunter) were strongly considered here as well.

    Round 11(130) – Josh Norris
Was really hoping to see Caufield (Shoeless) or Filip Forsberg (duntroon) fall to me here but alas they both went early in the round. But Norris could prove to provide pretty great value at this point of the draft and is a great #2C option for me

    Round 12 (135) – Matthew Barzal
I was torn on whether this was too early for him or if I could let him slide another round or 2. From what I’m seeing, he wouldn’t have lasted back around to me. The only downside is that I’m now counting on bounceback performances from 3 of my first 12 picks. I’ll risk it with that RW eligibility from Barzal though.

    Round 13 (154) – Vladimir Tarasenko
At this point my son had came off the ice with a headache so I was trying to juggle parental responsibilities with the draft. He wasn’t off long and I rushed this pick a bit but I think Tank could do pretty well in Ottawa this season.

    Round 14 (159) – Aaron Ekblad
Ekblad is really falling in drafts this year due to the injury and due to the emergence of Montour. But I think he takes the #1 job back in Florida once he’s back.

    Round 15 (178) – Logan Couture
There’s a whole bunch of not so sexy names going at this point in the draft and this was one of them. Steady production though and hopefully his +/- doesn’t kill me too much.

    Round 16 (183) – Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen
Admittedly I haven’t been paying super close attention to Buffalo’s training camp. But I do believe the Sabres end up rolling with UPL and Comrie more than Levi this year. It wasn’t that long ago that UPL was the goalie of the future in Buffalo and I still think that has a shot at happening.

    Round 17 (202) – Eric Comrie
It wasn’t my intention to draft the Buffalo tandem at this point but I watched my queue get decimated. I don’t hate this pick.

    Round 18 (207) – Tony Deangelo
After targeting D early, I focused elsewhere through the middle of the draft. I missed out on a lot of the multi-cat guys but TonyD should help my offense anyway.

    Round 19 (226) – Rasmus Sandin
He was a target of mine in the Stanley League but got sniped. I like him even more in this setup and am stoked to land him this late. He has a chance to be the heir apparent to Carlson in Washington.

    Round 20 (231) – Ivan Provorov
Owning Marchand, Provorov and Deangelo should easily give me the crown as the most hated team in the league right? He seems to be an afterthought in many leagues this season but I’ll take the late round flier on him.

    Round 21 (250) – Eeli Tolvanen
He finally broke out after I gave up on him late last year. So now that I welcome him back into the fold, he should be a total bust. I thought about Lafreniere here but figured he had a better chance of lasting through the turn to my next pick than Tolvanen did. Vrana went shortly before this pick and had been near the top of my queue for a bit.

    Round 22 (255) – Matthew Knies
Welp… Laffy didn’t last. I’ll take this kids exposure to the elite talent in Toronto though. Although that forward group is pretty crowded. Later rounds are always the time to try to hit a home run though.

    Round 23 (274) – Owen Power
I needed a spare D man and Buffalo seems to know how to develop young Dmen.

    Round 24 (279) – Kevin Hayes
If he can find his production in St Louis, this will be a steal. If not, back to the WW with you.

    Round 25 (298) – Michael Rasmussen
This pick is going to bring me my first RHRS title. Write that down

    Hotel Guentzelvania
    C: Point, Norris, Couture, Hayes
LW : Marchand, Guentzel, Tolvanen (RW), Knies, Rasmussen (C)
RW: Kucherov, Wilson, Tarasenko, Barzal (C)
D: Fox, Hamilton, Deangelo, Ekblad, Sandin, Provorov, Power
G: Oettinger, Skinner, Thompson, Luukkonen, Comrie

As always, just a phenomenal draft with a great group of GMs. I can’t wait to see how this season shakes out. I’m feeling good about my team, but I usually do this time of year. It’s like how you can still catch that glimmer of hope in a Leaf fan’s eye in October.
    Without me, it's only "aweso".

Default Re: 2023/2024 Rocky Horror Roto Show - Spooky Season #13

    Island of Dr. Pageau

C - Matthews, Hintz, Fantilli, Pageau
LW - Buchnevich, Ehlers, Lehkonen, Colton
RW - Miller, Boldy, Reinhart, Schmaltz
D - Karlsson, Burns, Chychrun, Montour, Petry
    G - Saros, Kuemper
BN - Woll, Fleury, Forsberg, Vilardi, Ingram, Daccord

    1. (6) Auston Matthews (TOR - C)

I wanted M.Tkachuk, would be happy with Matthews and would probably have picked Rantanen otherwise so fairly happy to end up with Matthews. At least it gives me one good center on my team to counteract how light on C my teams often end up. RW scarcity really pushes RWs up quite a bit so I had M.Tkachuk at 3rd overall over Mackinnon pretty much due to RW eligibility.

    2. (19) J.T. Miller (VAN - C,RW)

I was hoping for Dahlin or J.T. Miller with probably picking up G like Sorokin/Oettinger if both of those went. With RHRS categories I have Dahlin as a clear-cut #2D behind Makar and Miller has always been good player in RHRS providing good overall category coverage and FOW from wing. Miller also started taking significantly more faceoffs at both EV and PP after Horvat was traded so I have him projected for a nice bump in FOW to 700+ range which pushed him up about half a round in my rankings so I was probably little higher on him than others at #11 overall.

    3. (30) Juuse Saros (NSH - G)

I was originally planning to get Bouchard or Meier, but both were scooped up at the turn so had to find something else. I did think about picking up Thompson and especially Barkov, but did end up going with a goalie in the end with Saros. He was the last top tier goalie left on my list and decided I'd rather get Saros here over picking platoons later and didn't feel comfortable having someone like Gustavsson, Vanecek or Samsonov as my first goalie. I did consider going for both goalies from one/two of the top teams with the plan being to pick up both goalies from VGK/TOR/NJD/BOS/COL and maybe EDM/CAR too, but in the end decided to go with Saros and try to pick up some of those backups from top teams like Woll, Fleury or Raanta.

    4. (43) Erik Karlsson (PIT - D)

Thompson nearly made it back which surprised me, but I wasn't quite lucky enough for him to fall enough to reach my pick again. I was hoping to get Sergachev pre-draft, but he went nearly a round earlier so had to go with a backup choice in Karlsson. I don't think he will be repeating 100+ pace again, but somewhere around 80-85 pts pace should be doable as PIT is much superior team in pretty much every regard to what he had last season in SJ. Karlsson is kind of low on HIT/BLK for D so I probably have to compensate that later on and try to not pick too many similar players.

    5. (54) Matt Boldy (MIN - LW,RW)

I was hoping to get McAvoy, but happy with Boldy too and good to get RW on board as well fairly early in the draft. I did think about Ullmark too, but didn't want to invest two top5 picks on goalies. Hintz, W.Nylander and Marchand were under consideration, but I preferred to get RW and liked Boldy more than Nylander.

    6. (67) Roope Hintz (DAL - C)

Pre-draft plan was to look into likes of Letang, Burns, Pavelski and maybe goalie too depending on availability. Hintz and Nylander were still there though so was ended up picking between them. Hintz is problematic as having C-only player that only get ~300 FOW hurts my team pretty badly as just rostering him at C would probably cost my team 2-3 points in the standings and kind of wastes my FOW wingers investment. In the end I decided that Hintz was worth taking the hit in FOW, but I probably would have to compensate later on for the FOW loss or just be content being mid-table team in FOW category.

    7. (78) Brent Burns (CAR - D)

Letang, Pavelski and Nylander all went after my pick so that pretty much left me choosing between Burns, Hyman and Konecny. I thought I could wait a round or two on Konecny and preferred to 2nd D on board so Burns it is. Both Karlsson and Burns are pretty low on HITs/BLKs at this point of their careers so I probably have to dedicate at least 2 of the last D slots for HIT/BLK specialists, maybe pick up some PIM too. I did take a look at the goalies too, but though I could one more round.

    8. (91) Darcy Kuemper (WSH - G)

I was hoping to get Stuart Skinner, but he went so ended up choosing between Demko and Kuemper. I am not that high on either of them, but I wanted to get volume goalie on board and ended up with Kuemper. Outlook on WSH is pretty bad, but Kuemper has played at fairly good level for few seasons now so hoping for one more decent season from him. Both of my goalies were from playoff-bubble teams at best so I would have to target backups/platoon goalies from good teams later on. I also wanted to get Konecny, but felt getting 2nd goalie not was more important.

    9. (102) Sam Reinhart (FLA - C,RW)

Waiting one more round on Konecny backfired so had to find someone else to pick. I looked into Kadri, but thought I could probably wait one more round on him. I also considered Chychrun and Montour as well, but I needed to compensate for FOW after picking Hintz so went with Reinhart to gain some of that lost FOW back.

    10. (115) Jakob Chychrun (OTT - D)

Waitnig on Kadri didn't pay off so had choose elsewhere. I did consider F.Forsberg and Batherson as well, but opted to go for D at this point. I spent some time considering between Montour and Chychrun, but ended up going with Chychrun as I preferred to get more BLK/HIT heavy D first.

    11. (126) Brandon Montour (FLA - D)

Montour was still there so happy to pick him up. Injuries are always a bit worrying, but I felt it was worth the risk at this point of the draft as even at my 52 GP projections Montour should be solid value at this pick. I had 4D on board already and needed to get some BLK/HIT specialist on those 2 slots so it was probably better to wait on D picks until players like Ristolainen, Xhekaj and L.Schenn are reasonable targets.

    12. (139) Pavel Buchnevich (STL - C,LW)

I did consider picking a 3rd goalie with Levi, Woll and Copley on top of the list, but decided to wait one more round. I did think about Matheson, but wanted more HIT/BLK. Zuccarello was also under consideration, but I had more RW than LW at this point so wanted to balance the wings situation and went with best LW on my list in Buchnevich.

    13. (150) Joseph Woll (TOR - G)

Levi went and Raanta had also been selected couple rounds earlier so decided to not risk it anymore and picked up Woll. Very happy to get a backup from high-end team to help boost my goalie stats and there could also be an opportunity for starting role as Samsonov isn't exactly guaranteed starter at all.

    14. (163) Nikolaj Ehlers (WPG - LW)

I would probably have picked up Copley if he wasn't picked. I had Forsling as the best skater available, but didn't want pick up another low BLK/HIT D like Forsling. Another C would have been nice so I did consider going with Hertl, but Ehlers was so much higher on my rankings that decided to pick him.

    15. (174) Marc-Andre Fleury (MIN - G)

Hertl went and Fleury was still there so decided to shore up my goaltending a little bit. I expect Gustavsson to be a clear starter, but Fleury should still be getting 25-30 starts and I would be happy if he can play those games with decent ratios and good win-rate. I did start considering both Pacioretty and P.Kane at this point too, but decided to not pick them or at least not yet.

    16. (187) Artturi Lehkonen (COL - LW)

One of the last few Cs with solid FOW totals in Thomas and Hayton were still there and I should probably have gone with one of them here in hindsight. In the draft I opted to go with the highest rated forward on my list in Lehkonen instead.

    17. (198) Ross Colton (COL - C,LW)

Both Hayton and R.Thomas went so C options didn't look that great with likes of Johansen, Fantili, Pageau, Coyle and Danault being the better options so chose to go with Ross Colton. He has produced good numbers in a limited role so going to COL and being middle-sixer instead of 4th liner with possibly some PP time as well is a big boost in role compared to TBL. He's also LW-eligible while likely playing center full time so he should provide a nice boost to FOW from wing.

    18. (211) Jeff Petry (DET - D)

Johansen was still there and I did consider him, but opted to go for Petry here to boost BLK/HIT and pick someone like Pageau, Danault or J.Staal as C later.

    19. (222) Anton Forsberg (OTT - G)
    20. (235) Nick Schmaltz (ARI - C,RW)
    21. (246) Adam Fantilli (CBJ - C)
    22. (259) Gabriel Vilardi (WPG - C)
    23. (270) Connor Ingram (ARI - G)
    24. (283) Jean-Gabriel Pageau (NYI - C)
    25. (294) Joey Daccord (SEA - G)

Nothing too special happening here with picks consisting of low-end roster fillers, upside shots and goalie gambles. I was trying to get Xhekaj as PIM/HIT D, but I was little too greedy on waiting on him and he went before I managed to pick him up. I don't have a much confidence in Korpisalo and OTT should be a bubble-team at least so I feel Forsberg is worth taking a shot. Schmaltz should provide solid production and Pageau is a filler C to boost FOW and HIT. I like Fantilli's situation in CBJ and I think there's an opportunity to take over 1C role over the season with some multicat upside on top as well. Vilardi I probably won't start a single game at C as I am waiting on RW eligibility for him, hopefully it happens sooner rather than later. Ingram and Daccord are just shooting darts at any half-decent goalie and hoping for the best.

I was questioned when I said I preferred Rantanen over Pasta in a different thread.

But it looks like a few agreed with my thoughts in this league.

what a tough group and tough draft. Will get to my write up tomorrow

I probably more prepared heading into this season than I have in the past. So over the last few weeks, have been watching a lot of Youtube streams of fantasy hockey news, and been doing a few mock drafts just to get the draft positioning right. But, with this calibre of league, doesn’t really matter how much you prepare, you’re going to get sniped one way or another. Heading into the draft, I pretty much knew all the undervalued players, so it was just a matter of when to reach to get the ahead of the rest of the pack…

I had the same pick 4 as last year, so I kept to a similar strategy heading in and knew that basically McDavid, Draisaitl were gone… so really it was up to Duntroon to take Matthews or Mackinnon, and I’d take the other… didn’t think he’d go Tkachuk, but I was hoping more for MacKinnon, so that was a pretty easy decision for me…

Round 2/3, heading into the draft was interesting, as Yahoo! had a lot of the goalies rank much lower, and traditionally speaking, our league has had a heavy bounty on goalies, so I was intrigued to see what would play out. 2 goalies went out in the first 15 picks, which pushed Ovechkin down the draft list to me. To be honest, pretty ecstatic about it, as I was really hoping for 1 of Crosby/Ovechkin to drop down with my 2nd pick. I was also looking at Miller, Sorokin or Georgiev at that 21 spot, and to have Georgiev still be around at the 28 spot was great in my books. Very interesting pick of Bouchard by Shoeless, bit early in my opinion, but he wouldn’t have made it around for his next pick, so it’s a move he’s forced to make if he wanted Bouchard. Svech, by Duntroon, was another one who was high on the social media army of “must drafts”, so he was a little bit of a reach for the draft position, but can’t fault the move. Barkov, by Q, was also heavily promoted by the content creators, don’t know if there is much value to be gained at 36? But he’s always been a solid fantasy producer, especially given our stats.

Round 4/5, I’ve always been a goalie nut, so wanted to solidify the position with pick 4, the drop off of top tier to the lower tiers is pretty big, so I wanted to secure someone from the upper tiers to go alongside Georgiev. Hellebuyck, Saros, Samonov, Vanacek and Vas all go between my picks, so I sensed a goalie run going on, so I grabbed the last of the 2nd tier goalies in Gustavsson. Carlson was another one who was highly touted as undervalued on social media, and it was always interesting to see where he would go and who would pull the trigger to reach first. So 48th for Shoeless might have been a bit high, but I seriously considered him at 52 with my next pick if he fell. Seth Jones also seemed like a bit of a reach of one of two rounds too early for me. Instead, I went back to someone I drafted last year and the highest point producer available in Panarin. 92 points last year, and the Rangers squad really didn’t change much from 2022… The lack of peripherals hurts his value, but looking at the other available options, was a bit of a no brainer. Can’t really nitpick the rest of the selections.

Round 6/7, some really good value picks in round 6. I was pretty desperate for a winger at my next pick, and I really wanted Giroux or Nylander, but both went just a couple of picks before mine. The Nylander snipe hurt… Bedard jumped out at me. Rookies are insanely difficult to predict especially in fantasy, but his current ADP is 34 and he landed on my plate with the 69th pick, so can’t really say I’m disappointed in that pick. Time will tell whether he’s an 87-point McDavid rookie pace, or a more conservative 55-65 point rookie? I had zero D at this point, so I needed to jump in on it quick smart. I didn’t grab any tier 1 D, so really had to settle for 2 tier 2 D over the next few picks or the blue line. Hedman was a no-brainer for me at 76. Two years ago, he was a Top-3 fantasy blue-liner, and I know Sergachev took a bit of wind out of his sails last year, but if he manages to claw back some of the PP1 time, and get his SH% back up into his career average of 7, his fantasy value should be a steal at this draft position. Even if he maintains last year’s numbers along with the 100/100 HITs/BS, he’s good value. I wanted to follow the Hedman pick with Burns in the next pick, to give me a solid, 1/2 but he went 2 picks after Hedman, so quash that ideal. I also was eyeing Nurse for the peripherals, but he’s gone too. Also looking at the reaches so far, I knew I had to reach to make my next pick happen with Evander Kane at 93. He’s a fantasy monster when healthy, so if he can manage to stay on the ice avoiding freak injuries, he should be a nice contributor to my peripheral stats. Couple of reaches again with Laine and Jenner in this round, maybe a tad early by a couple of rounds, but with the owners in this league, can’t get away with anything around here…

Round 8/9, I like Konecny, but once again thought it was early for his ADP. I thought heavily on Tom Wilson at this pick, but I thought I could sneak him in 1 more round, and since I was running thin at D and with the lack of depth remaining I went with Pietrangelo instead. Reflecting on it, probably shoulda just reached for Wilson. Some really nice value picks in this round too, loved Kopitar, Huberdeau, Scheifele and Chychrun picks.

Round 10/11, With 2 solid goalies, I knew I needed a 3rd just to solidify the stats, I had Korpisalo queued up, but saw him go 2 picks before mine, so had to take the next best available in Markstrom. Following along the same theme as Hedman and I’m looking for a rebound year, Markstrom owned a 37-15-9 record with a 2.22 GAA and .922 SP 2 seasons ago, the wheels completely fell off last year, but the Flames aren’t a bad team, and he isn’t a terrible goalie. With Georgiev and Gustavsson, I don’t need Markstrom to carry my team, just being slightly above average will do. Some solid value in the next couple of picks with Batherson, Werenski, Theodore, Caufield, Forsberg. Really dig those picks, I absolutely love the Werenski pick, was hoping all draft to land him at a later spot. I had Forsberg queued ready to select then he gets sniped pick before mine… At this point, wasn’t very confident with Bedard as my #2, so I knew I needed a solid number 1 C, so I grabbed one of the last ones available in Suzuki… besides the rough Dec/Jan he has last year where he went 4/51 (7.8%), he went 22/111 (19.9%) for the rest of the months. I pondered a bit in grabbing my 3rd D, but the board had a bit of value left, so I thought I’d address the C situation instead, but Montour, Toews, Andersson, and the one that I was really after Doughty goes… could be another Wilson moment…

Default Re: 2023/2024 Rocky Horror Roto Show - Spooky Season #13

Round 12/13, I had zero RW at this point in the draft, so I figured I need to get that ball rolling. Most of the quality pick were already gone at this point, so just had to pick best player available. Toffoli had a change of scenery, and has a top-6 role with the up and coming Devils, so I thought he was a good choice. If he can scrounge some time with Hughes, or even solid time with Hischer and Meier, he could be a solid fantasy producer. Chabot did cross my mind, but my need for a RW was greater. Next pick I wanted to get another RW to fill the gaps, debated heavily on Tarasenko or Zuccarello, and I thought I could pull off Zuc this round then circle back to Tarasenko, but he went 6 picks after. Zuc at least gets me exposure to Kaprizov and the Wild top PP unit and also contributes a little bit on the peripheral front. Nichushkin/Matheson were two that I was targeting at the later rounds, so was a bit disappointed to see them go a tad earlier than expected.

Round 14/15, most of my “value” picks have already been snijrvisped off the board, so I decided to roll the dice on Campbell. With 3 goalies already locked, swinging for the fences and hoping that Campbell regains his number 1 goalie form again, is low risk high reward kinda play. Worst comes to worst, Campbell plays in 25 starts, and I get a few starts off the 165th pick, best case scenario he outplays Skinner and grabs the number 1 goalie slot in one of the leagues best teams this season… Some solid picks here in Ekblad, Bertuzzi, Husso, Kuzmenko, Stephenson. Next round rolls along, and I’m still not convinced with my C with MacKinnon, Bedard and Suzuki, so I knew I needed a 4th just to shield the stats a bit, I scoured the C depth chart and luckily found Hertl sitting there. I honestly left him off my pre-rank draft list, and he was hardly mentioned in any of the social media rounds, so I was pleasantly surprised to see him sitting there. In a dismal season, he still managed to pick up 63 points, 22 of which were on the PP, 91 HITs, 183 SOG and close to 800 FW, absolutely not bad for a C4. His -36 hurts, but we all know that it’s a fickle stat to try to manage, so worth the risk. The rest of the goalies Hart, Fleury, Vejmelka all good, so kinda makes me feel that the Campbell pick last round was worth it.

Round 16/17, round 16 started off with a steal in Patty Kane! If he comes back for 50-65 games, he’d be well worth this draft at 181. I thought I got a steal with Rielly at 189, I only had 2 blueliners (Hedman and Pietrangelo) at this point, so this was a massive weak area for my team, but I had a bit of a sneaky strategy as I noticed both Rielly and Klingberg available, if I can manage to grab one then pray to god that the other is still available on the boomerang, I could snag the PP QB on the 2nd best PP in the league last year. Boom! managed to pull it off with picks 189/196 got both Reilly and Klingberg, so hopefully I get Bouchard-like value in which Shoeless paid a 3rd round price for and I only paid round 16/17. I was so fixated on the combo, that I didn’t really care who went in these 2 rounds. On reflection, good value on the Pionk, Hayton, Couturier, Rust picks. The run of Ds in these 3 rounds, Forsling, Lindholm, Rielly, Pionk, Klingberg, Hughes, Larsson, Miller, Sanderson, Hronek, DeAngelo, Petry and Skjei pretty much decimated the D queue.

Round 18/19, back to trying to address my winger depth at this position. I had a queue of Seguin, DeBrusk all lined up, but saw both of them go before me, so I reached a bit for Tippett. Lots of hype around him making the social media rounds, so thought I’d solidify my R3. Overall, round 18/19 was a decent round with some more value picks with Hall, Zacha, Jarvis and Johansen who were also on my pre-rank draft lists. I did a bit of homework scouting for players on bottom half teams, but maintaining top-six roles prior to the draft. I was trying to identify this year’s Keller and identified two players who could fit the mold, Lucas Raymond and my round 23 pick Lukas Reichel. Larkin has help in DeBrincat this year, so if Raymond join that duo and shake the sophomore slump to get back to the same ballpark as his rookie season numbers: 60P, 20PPP, 60 HITs and 180ish SOG, he should be good value at 220 slot. Brown was also on my target list, but just didn’t fall late enough for me to snag. Risto is always a peripheral stud, and with hardly any depth on the blue-line in Philly, he could play a bigger offensive role this season. Great pick to round out pick 228.

Round 20/21, another queue-clearing round for me, as I had Duchene and Schmaltz queued to see them go. This late into the draft, I went to swing for the fences with the goalies again and grabbed the last number 1 starter available. With my 4 goalies already, I don’t envision starting Gibson all that much, but a few starts against SJ and Ari might churn out some sneaky “stat padding” situations. Low risk here. Can’t fault any of the picks between Gibson and Wheeler as there’s a bit of value in Boeser, McTavish, Vrana, Byram and Hanifin. So with pick 244, I went with Wheeler. Fresh start in the Big Apple, and he should get some sold top-six time with either Zibanejad and Panarin or Trochek and Kreider or some combination of the two. If he can put up his usual 60P, 60 HITs and 150 SOG, I’d be laughing with this pick as my R4. I didn’t mind the young kids of Fantilli and Cooley in this round same with Tolvanen. I still think Bedard is the favourite for the Calder, but it will be interesting to see if the 15 round and 180 pick difference between the three was worth it?

Round 22/23, getting to the pointy end of the draft now as the clock ticks close to 2am for me. Wanted some offensive upside for my D5, and York was making the rounds with the social media contents creators, so decided to take a punt on him. On paper the Flyers don’t have a bad PP. They have Couturier and Atkinson returning, along with Konecny and Tippett, with York as their possible PP1 QB, he could be in for a decent under-the-radar season. I debated on Power or Spurgeon at this spot, but thought York had a tad more upside. I really dig the Vilardi pick, great late-round value there. As I alluded to earlier, round 23 saw me pick Reichel. I did a lot of pre-draft scoping the “bottom rung” teams scrounging for top-six/line value. Reichel finished the season with 8 points in the final 8 games along with 17 SOG last season, so there’s a bit of upside there. There’s a possibility that the Hawks stack the top-line with Bedard and Hall with Reichel, or leave him on as the 2nd line C with Athanasiou and Perry/Kurashev. Either way, Reichel should get a look at the PP1 slot with Bedard and Hall, so there could be some value to be had here. Coyle could be an interesting pick as he'll battle Zacha for the C1 spot in Beantown, Zacha probably had the edge, but Coyle could give him a real run for the money.

Round 24/25, literally grasping at straws now… I grabbed Shattenkirk in a panic move as I was scrolling through the bottom of the barrel looking for value. With Grzelyk, McAvoy and Lindholm there, I don’t think there will be any time for Shattenkirk at all on the PP, his 115 BS last season just stood out to me, but I have a feeling he will be my first WW victim, just gotta decide who is the D6 replacement? I ummmed and ahhhed between him and Spurgeon, and I think I really shoulda went with Spurgeon. Last round, and pretty much just looked for BPA. My pre-draft queue was nearly empty and had 3 players left. Teravainen, Cirelli and Atkinson were the only ones left in the queue.

    Team Maaaaaachete
    MacKinnon, Bedard, Suzuki, Hertl
    Ovechkin, Panarin, E. Kane, Raymond
    Toffoli, Zuccarello, Tippett, Wheeler
Hedman, Pietrangelo, Rielly, Klingberg, York, Shattenkirk

    Georgiev, Gustavsson, Markstrom, Campbell, Gibson

Here’s my bible recap! Let’s get it started! Good luck boys!

I like him over Rantanen, and usually over Tkachuk except maybe not here since PIM is a category in this league.
He produced on the 2nd line for a bit too, I’m not worried about his production, just health which is the same magnitude for Rantanen. I’m no BOS fan either
RW scarcity is pretty real this year.

It's SHOW TIME! An early morning show (for us east coasters anyway) which means a bloody mark instead of my usual double IPA as I build my queue in the Yahoo draft room. Doing an audit of my team last year and looking at the top 3 finishers I came away with a few lessons learned from my 6th place finish - zero G was NOT my friend last year. I aced it in all skater cats and tanked in all goalie cats. If would have had avg goalie stats I would have been competing for the top spot. Going in my general plan was to being strong up the middle (cross-category centers with high FOW), target 2 clear PP quarterbacks on D, and not have to sweat/micro manage my goalie stats. While zero G has it's advantages, I need to remember that 2 of my 20 active roster spots account for almost 30% of my roto scoring cats and making up goalie stats in this league is damn near impossible without mortgaging the farm. Our GMs are pretty savvy and know the positional scarcity of d-men and goalies, so you need to be prepared to draft above ADP to fill key needs. Also, after a year of experience of doing my own rankings, I'm more comfortable/confident in getting value when and where I see it.

I'm drafting in the 2nd hole, so I know I'm taking Draisaitl and I also need to manage drafting on the turn.

    1. (2) L. Draisaitl C/LW

He does it all, goals, points, PPP, FOW and dual eligibility.

    2. (23) Marner RW

Not a player I normally draft but hard to pass on a 100 point ceiling and thinness at RW.

    3. (26) Sorokin G

This was my gut check on whether I stick to plan. I didn’t want to be the first guy taking a goalie but I didn’t want to miss on any of the 4 goalies I was targeting in my tier. The top 2 in my rankings went before me so the timing was right and he’s always solid.

    4. (47) Heiskanen D

Getting a top PPP D is critical and they’re starting to get taken. He was last one remaining in my tier. Maybe a round early for my liking, but a necessity due to positional scarcity.

    5. (50) Ericksson Ek C

You either love or hate this pick but I have my plan and I’m sticking to it. JEE is grossly underrated in most formats and I can generally get him much later in drafts where the GMs aren’t as savvy; however, with our league’s scoring cats and FOW coverage, I have him rated in the mid-30 range. He’s solid/safe across the board with a somewhat lower ceiling.

    6. (71) Horvat C

Another value across the board center, with elite FOW category coverage.

    7. (74) Pavelski C/RW

Year in, year out, he does it all and is solid value in this round. Slotting him as a RW is a plus.

    8. (95) Demko G

This was an opportunistic pick me – there were a few D’s I considered but to get a skilled, workhorse starting goalie along with Sorokin is too good of an opportunity to pass. I see Demko rebounding over last year and the team’s improved. He finished the season strong in his last 10 games and baring an injury, is really nice value here for me.

    9. (98) Kreider LW

I love goal scoring wingers with grit.

    10. (119) Werenski D

Got my 2nd PPP quarterback. Given the value of D-men in our league, he’s a great option WHEN HEALTHY. He’s also one of the few D men than can push for 20 goals; and the Jackets are trending positive.

    11. (122) Marchessault RW

One of my favorite players to target; always undervalued, high shot generator, provides really nice value at the RW position at this point in draft.

    12. (143) Faulk D

Time to start filling in my D spots. I really like his across the board roto coverage along with the PP time (maybe more so this year given lack of options with STL).

    13. (146) Necas C/RW

A top 75-100 player with RW eligibility. Very underrated.

    14. (167) Stephenson C

Mining value at the C position for this pick. He’s always undervalued and always punches above his weight.

    15. (170) Gudas D

He's the poster boy for the Horror Show – ugly, nasty, and out slashes Jason on Halloween. Monster banger coverage in the D position is really nice at this point.

    16. (191) Pionk D

Always provides solid peripheral coverage and gets some PP exposure.

    17. (194) Hagel LW

Getting a forward with 30 goal / 50 PIM potential around pick 200 is like stealing the candy bag from a trick-or-treater.

    18. (215) Zacha C

I though he would’ve gone way earlier – likely #1 center for the B’s with exposure to their top PP and he’ll be slotted as my #4 center. He’s seems to have figured it out since his Devil days and could provide excellent returns at this draft position. Low risk and high reward potential is a no brainer.

From this point on, it’s just darts and stocking stuffing:

    19. (218) Burakovsky It’s a ‘meh’ pick but he does score points and will play in the top six, along with dual R/LW eligibility.
    20. (239) McTavish C/LW Maybe more ice time with Zegras sitting out; otherwise nice upside.
    21. (242) Hannifin D
    22. (263) Clarke D Rumored ‘heir apparent’ to Doughty’s PP role; worth a dart.
    23. (266) DeSmith insurance policy pick to at least provide full VAN goalie coverage
    24. (287) Spurgeon D good defenseman in real life that gets PP exposure when MIN bad defenseman in real life gets benched.
    25. (290) Rodrigues C/LW In my big roster H2H leagues, he’s proved a useful streamer.

Happy with my draft, happy with my team, happy with my plan. No grades until season end.
