    Default Prospect Trade

My team is in my signature. I was offered Kevin Korchinski for William Eklund. I'm trying to figure out if this is good value. I like Eklund but I also have a lot of LW prospects at the moment. Thanks for any input!

    Interesting offer.

In a vacuum I would not take this offer.
I like William Eklund as a prospect.
He scored 41 points in 54 AHL games and..
3 points in first 8 NHL games experience.

But with you mention of LW depth
And the difficulty in finding quality D prospects.
And the huge opportunity of playing on a PP with Bedard.
And Korchinski coming off a huge WHL season...

I think I would make the trade and diversify your depth
And take the chance of getting a tonne of powerplay points
    With Connor Bedard in Chicago.

I'd prefer Korchinski here. The upside of him being the PP1 QB for Bedard is very enticing. He's also very good on his own merits, too.

I absolutely agree with PenguinHunter here. I also see Seth getting pushed out of PP1 once Korchinski is ready

The question is when will korchinski be ready. Eklund will start producing this season but korch probably not until next season or even the season after.

For me I’d see if you can do this as a 2:2 where the second piece you slightly upgrade in your current roster

Without context, Eklund should be more valuable but since you have depth at W, the deal makes sense for you. I would probably take it.

    Welcome to the forum!

I absolutely get positional requirements and your goal to find a better balance, if you don't manage that well you can get into trouble for sure. However, I have a few concerns here that we will discuss but at the end of the day you know your team and your league, so you make decisions accordingly. My primary concern here is that while we use the term "prospect" in the broadest sense the reality is prospects are both 18 or 19 years old at one end of the prospect spectrum, or 21- or 22-year-olds at the other end of the prospect spectrum. For fantasy hockey purposes, this is apples and oranges. Korchinski is at one end of that spectrum, Eklund is at the other.

Eklund is NHL ready, his numbers in the A and his brief cup of coffee with the big club are proof of that. He will be a full time NHL forward with the Sharks next year and I also think that given the forward depth in San Jose, there is every chance that he will be skating top 6 minutes for most of the season. He will be fantasy relevant.

Korchinski is a 19-year-old defensemen. Simply put, his road to fantasy relevance will be another 2 to 3 years. Yes, someday, he may quarterback a PP1 in Chicago with the Bedard factor in full effect, but that day is well down the road. Further, when he has evolved his game to be NHL ready, he will still have Seth Jones in his way. With 9.5 Mil AAV over the next several years, the economic reality of that contract is a huge factor and most assuredly puts Jones in the DeFacto #1 guy on the blueline.

So, for me it basically boils down to losing Eklund's immediate and potentiallhy significant fantasy relevancy in favour of waiting on Korchinski's possibly reaching his potential. This may well make sense given your team and league situation. Or not. I simply offer this for your consideration. Good luck.

Thanks for all the input I really appreciate it! I ended up accepting the offer. I hated trading away Eklund but hopefully Lukas Reichel and Slafkovsky can be my LW's of the future. If KK ends up being the QB on the PP1 with Bedard I think it will help my team for a long time. Again thanks for all the input!
