Week 3 - let’s go with video games!

I personally don’t play video games anymore. But I figured it would be a good topic.

Favorite game series over the years:

Civilization - The quintessential "just one more turn."
Final Fantasy IV through XIII.
The Souls games, Demon Souls, Dark Souls I, II, and III, Elden Ring. Elden Ring brought me out of retirement, as will its eventual DLC.

This thread is definitely going to show the age of some of us!
1) Super Tecmo Bowl (NES) Epic HS tournaments playing this game.
2) Sega NHL '94 Precursor to many college parties. The scene in Swingers played out at my buddies house many times.
3) Baseball Stars (NES)- This was the first game I remember being able to build a team, give players names, and improve their abilities by playing and winning exhibition games.
4) Double Dribble (NES)
5) Super Mario Brothers (NES)
6) Call of Duty (PS3)
7) Grand Turisimo (PS1) Great game even though I am not a huge racing game fan.
8) Madden (PS1) They all kind of blend together for me.
9) Ice Hockey (NES) Spent hours playing this game!
10) RBI Baseball (NES)

In no particular order and I am definitely forgetting something.

1) NHL hockey by EA Sports - I have bought it annually since 1994
2) Suikoden (all 5 of them) - remake coming out soon and a spiritual successor is coming out next year, I am so excited
3) Azure Dream - I wish I could still play this or there was a similar game out there (I love collecting monsters but don't like Pokémon)
4) Baseball Stars
5) Super Mega Baseball series
6) Contra series
7) Jackal (aka Top Gunner)
8) Diablo series (4 still needs some work)
9) World of Warcraft (online games are no longer a thing for me but they were for a decade)
10) Civilization series and all it's 4X clones (especially the more fantasy based ones)

Oh man. This is tough. I'm going to have to try to group some together here.

1. Skyrim - easily the most enthralled I've ever been with a game
2. The Show - It's the perfect sports game because the sliders are adjustable to a realistic level. There's no cheat goals or plays like in Madden or NHL. It's just pure baseball bliss.
3. Mass Effect 2 - prior to this game I basically only played sports games. The Rogers video store near me was closing and still remember just buying it because it was like $20 and was getting 10/10 reviews. It opened my eyes to the world of RPGs.
4. Last of Us - amazing experience I'd recommend to anyone. The sequel was enjoyable...but not the same.
5. God of War - this makes it because of the remake from a few years ago. I played the earlier games and they were fun. But the remake set a new level of expectation.
RDR 1 and 2. See above re the sequel
6. GTA / RDR Series - Yep...I grouped them all.
7. WWF No Mercy / WCW Revenge - sooooooooooo many hours of my teenage years
8. Portal 2 - Possibly the most fun I've had playing a game.
9. Fallout 4 - Another game where I spent a TON of time.
10. Arkham Series - just a frigging incredible adaption of the world

Just missed -
NHL / Madden series - probably the 2nd most time spent playing these games, but I think I have because I just love the sports and love franchise modes. The games have been good, but they're tough to put on my BEST lists because of their annoying "cheap plays" or super AI that you run into on the harder settings.

Witcher 3. I liked it. But I always compared it to Skyrim and I just didn't find the world as interesting.

The fact Max Payne hasn't shown up on anyone's list even yet is criminal :P

Twisted Metal also another great game not yet said. Now I'm reminded of Carmageddon lol. I'll think about a list later.

NHL'94

Is this the one where they introduced the deflection button and so in a full 60 minute game you could score 70+ goals lol.

You must have some memories of them still.

My list - not sure what criteria I'm using so it's what it is, and there's no order:

Civilization 1 and 2
Warcraft II
Battlefield 1942
Myth II: Soulblighter
Planescape: Torment
Medieval: Total War
Grand Theft Auto III
The Witcher 3
Disco Elysium

Plenty of other great games like Tetris, Doom, Quake, Unreal Tournament, Diablo, Sid Meiers Pirates!, Portal, X-Com, Pinball Dreams, Sensible Soccer, Battlefield Bad Company 2: Vietnam, Baba Is You... I think games are tougher to rank compared to movies..

I haven't played video games in ages but my top three that I probably played the most at one point in time:

1. Counter Strike on my PC
2. COD, the first couple of editions on PS3
3. MarioKart on Wii
