Worst changes in hockey in your lifetime

Kind of an opposite from my other thread, what is it that you dislike in the game.


For me, it has to be the way refs call a game between the regular season and the playoffs. Drives me nuts. Not sure that's really a change per se, but I hate it about the game. That and the fights that happen after a big clean hit.

Calling games differently in the playoffs vs. regular season.

There's nothing worse when your Dman has his stick grabbed and he's pulled to the ice and your team loses the series on the goal scored seconds later.
(they weren't going to win the series. just a shitty way to lose a game)

Axe's complaint more than anything but close 2nd is the shootout competition of individual players determining the end of a game played by a team. I've never understood some people's hostility to tie games.

If the influence of gambling continues to increase each season I think that'll be the worst change in my lifetime though. I used to enjoy intermission.

I am not sure what I think about this one, but a friend of mine told me 'no red line'. He mentioned in his view it sped up the game but also took out much of the creativity of the game.

Personally, I dont like the digital ads, shootout, no ties.

If I were to make a change in hockey today, I would start the season in mid September so the season can end in May instead of June when it doesn't even really feel like hockey season.

Oh man, I just thought of one that really rots me as well and that's the total lack of transparency that we now call "goalie interference". Why can we not get any consistency in regards to that rule. No one really seems to understand it, including the refs.

(I'm going to offend some people's opinions... sorry, not sorry).
For me - you have a team you watch - if you love the game, you should WANT to see all these different colours of jerseys: the blues of Toronto, the reds of Montreal & Chicago & Detroit, that Philly Orange, Dallas greens. Beauty.

But... unfortunately... like many sports, most people are "homers" over being general fans of the sport.
So with two teams on a white rink, they need their team in their colour so they are easier to spot and so that they can wear/rock the same (better) colour jersey.

I mean... I get it (from a homer's perspective)... but I don't like it.
I mean... if you go out and date girls... do you want them to always be wearing the same thing... or YOU to always be wearing the same thing.
That's a no-contest for me. And that's how hockey is for me. Give me the variety.

Reviews. Just adding reviews in general in is the biggest annoyance in the game. I feel like it's an overcorrection to the Duchene offside and it's snowballed to a point where it's bad.

It's easier for me to stomach that a ref missed the goal on Bobrovsky by Rielly in the playoffs than it is for me to be told the league couldn't definitively find an angle that shows the goal. Then you get into "you need to see the puck in the angle and not stich multiple angles to determine a goal/offside/highstick". Then you get into why the heck isn't there a camera at the height of the crossbar to determine high stick goals easier. Or how they haven't invested in technology in a puck to determine if it's crossed the line.

I just hate how they half-assed the whole review process and essentially just stopped trying to make the reviews easier. They just expand what can be reviewed. How can new fans understand things and try and bet on outcomes when the reviews aren't even consistent. It was all pandoras box to me, and then they gave up.

I think in many cases both teams can wear their colored jerseys. USC and UCLA have done this in football where USC is wearing their crimson jerseys while UCLA wears their columbia blue. Looks spectacular. Just imagine Toronto and Montreal or St Louis and Chicago with the reds and blues! I know the white jerseys started back when there were only black and white TVs but that stopped 50+ years ago. I know red and green wouldn't work because of color blindness but some colors would work especially red and blue which are the most common colored jerseys.

No salary cap in the playoffs is the development I've disliked the most. The fact that Tampa, Vegas, and Chicago all won Cups with inflated salary caps is not right. Tampa's Cup in particular with the Kucherov games will always have an asterisk in my mind.

Team should not be able to luck into having such an advantage.
Not just a bitter Habs fan saying this... NYI got hosed out of a Cup that year.

I think in many cases both teams can wear their colored jerseys.

The NHL should/could definitely entertain this...
But I'd imagine there's some rule where the home team has the right to specify what the road team wears - and probably that those should be "white".
I'd also speculate that forcing your opponents to wear "white" makes it harder to spot a teammate.

From playing hockey growing up, my peripheral vision always sensed a teammate a "tinge" better if we were wearing colour jerseys.
For a few years I played on a team with white jerseys and I hated it.
