SJ would probably take Granlund and Petry. It would allow less retained salary & increase return.

SJ will get more than a 1st rounder in value in a deal for EK.
He might be 11.5m - but he just dropped 100pts.

Petry, Granlund, 2024 -1st, one of Ty Smith or Pickering & a couple B-level prospects like Svejkovsky & Legare

and probably a couple conditional picks - 2025 2nd or 3rd that can become a 1st if Pitt wins the cup in 2024 or 2025.
5th - become a 3rd if EK plays over 65 games in each of next two seasons.

I think teams will see Petry as an attractive deadline option.
SJ can retain on him to make the extra year more attractive.

I do agree, sending both is a big ? - That would be Dubas' ideal - also means SJ retains less on EK to get it done - attractive to SJ
at 833k this year & 1.8m the next 3 - SJ might just buy out Granlund if they are unable to trade him.
SJ would end up pretty close to even in dead cap at 50% retained... but for 2 less years.

it would be a lot more fun if Tor was involved in the EK talks as a 3rd team - taking on Petry with SJ retaining salary & Brodie joining EK in Pitts.

I'd fail myself if not for the trade being PIT-SJ.

I missed BAD-LY.
No Granlund Buyout.
Just a single LATE (likely) 1st rounder going back to SJ.


I will say this - my trade "fairness" was fine.
Capfriendly sent out a tweet that suggested that holding $5m of cap hit = 1st round pick.

I had proposed SJ hold 50%, which would be $5.75m x 4 years = $23m = 4.5 "first round picks" - which would've been a windfall... just for holding cap.
Then... on top of that - sending out a player such as Karlsson AT a $5.75m cap hit would've had enormous value.
And... there should've been value on SJ clogging roster spots with EATING Granlund for 2years and EATING Hoffman.
SJ also, now, only has ONE retain slot left. So they could move out an expiring deal at deadline (Hoffman,1yr or Duclair,1yr at say 50%)... but that seemed unwise to retain just $1.5m on Karlsson and plug a spot.

It's clear Dubas wasn't offering a lot.
And I hope (!?!) that SJ ownership put the clamps to Grier to "trade him - we want to go forward without him".
(The return is just absolutely underwhelming for actual assets moving out.)


But towards things being fair... I feel OK that I understand retained-cap-hit for return market value.

Ya it's a 15 team no trade list.

It really depends how much SJS is going to retain, and it sounds like SJS doesn't want to retain more than 30%.

And also depends where SJS sees themselves.

Should be an interesting trade when/if it happens. I think we'll see the trade and go "that's all it took?".
