NHL Mock Draft 2023-2024 - Discussion

With 5 goalie categories, and everyone having to roster 2 goalies minimum, I wanted to make sure I got at least one elite goalie. I can see both strategies though (goalies early vs punting goalies), and don't think either is wrong.

Oh... I've done enough roto pools with 12 & 14 GMs.
Goalies run 2nd/3rd rounds if GMs are smart & experienced.
If I pass... we're still at same point... but maybe 1 or 2 less goalies.

The other benefit - if a goalie run happens, there's less of a skater drop-off.
I had Zibanajed as my #15 skater... so one can see how far he slid with the goalies sprinkled in.

In other words - if there are (and I assume there are) smart GMs in this group... the goalie run in round 2/3 was going to happen with or without me starting it.
I don't want my first goalie to be 8 deep in ROTO.
I want a lock top 5 goalie.
Dallas is great team - may win West.
And Oettinger is a guy who can eat starts.

[I actually think Shesterkin, Sorokin, Vas are better overall goalies... but the East is. just. brutal for talent this year. I want no part of Eastern goalies, if I can. Day after day high-level skaters.]

Yea, makes sense. Goalies usually start going mid-late first, so this was quite late from my experience. It's a very different league though with the inability to cover for any sort of goalie mishaps that usually happen.

I'm happy to have taken Sorokin where I got him. Little competition and an average team, just one that doesn't allow a lot of shots...

Yea, makes sense. Goalies usually start going mid-late first, so this was quite late from my experience.

It varies by year.
Last year - there was an "elite four" - if I remember correctly.
When there is an upper, clear tier - they go earlier.

With Ullmark & Gustavsson rising up... the top tier is rangier (I'd say 10-12 deep).
[If Shesterkin & Sorokin & Hellebuyck were top 5 in all of W,SV%,GAA... then the clearer upper tier would've stayed]

So - the "rangier" upper goalie tier that means it starts later... because you don't get a CLEAR edge by reaching in first round.
A lot of young skaters have risen up - and our draft effectively caught that.

THIS... our draft... will be (I'd bet on it) very representative of how ROTO leagues will go this year.
I don't think there's two goalies that should go first round in any 12 to 14-team one-year league.

I hope so! I do have a bit of a plan in mind for the remaining draft, but with that said, this is my first time doing a draft like this, so if my plan falters I'll write it off as a learning experience for next year.
I really wanted two starters who aren't in 1a/1b situations and are on strong teams. Now that I have that, I'll move on to drafting for other categories.

I think you'll do great for all that's worth, and I enjoy seeing different strategies. Invictus tried something last year. Should be interesting to see how you do. In the end, much comes down to luck, imho.
