Tony for his faults is a great offensive player. Hes had 2 seasons of 50+ pts in less than 70 games. At 1-2m you could do alot worse as long as he keeps his head down and just plays while his (immense) defensive weaknesses are hidden

He just doesnt fit the way Torts coaches, it is not his fault the GM that traded for him and signed him to this deal sucks as a GM. He'll get a job and I think itll be Carolina for like $1m again

For that reason, I could see Washington being a destination.
    Carolina again.
    Maybe Florida.
That's about it for the East.

In the West, LA seems possible.
Or something random like Winnipeg, which doesn't jive with what I said above but may be desperate enough to give it a try.

I don't know. That's really about the extent of the teams I see possibly having a place for him -- and some of those are a stretch. He's running out of potential suitors.

I think one of the pitfalls with TonyD is he is a "spotlight" guy.
These kinds of players - they'll pinch or join the rush... score a big goal... and they want the celebration.
The other 50% of the time, that pinch/rush costs a big goal against. And often - unless you are watching or at the game - you don't see that mistake.
Teammates, coaches... they ALWAYS see that mistake.
Not only do they always see that mistake... but they see it when it's a mistake and, fortunately, a goal isn't scored against, maybe the goalie saves it, maybe the opposing forwards make a bad pass or miss the net.

But that's TonyD - he's as costly against as he is for.
    And... lockerrooms don't love that.
It's annoying to give somebody the glory for scoring... they should also have to take blame for costing a goal against.

[I actually don't think TonyD's personality/political shit is the main issue - and some think it is. It's his pure style of play/game/accolades-he-wants-with-it.]

Guys like Ilya Kovlachuk and Alexander Mogilny... same types.
    Look at me - I'm scoring - I'm amazing.
(And then the goals from lazy backchecking, bad effort come the other way. It's annoying for lockerrooms, players, coaches).
I HATE these kinds of guys... so I also hate TonyD, externally as somebody who "plays".

If you've played the game - TonyD is an annoying teammate.
And yes - a lot of lockerrooms can't handle this kind of guy and it hurts the vibe/culture/system.

There ARE strong lockerrooms that can handle a guy like this.
But it wasn't the NYR from 3+ years ago... and it wasn't the young PHI room.

    We'll see...

I'd say that the "me first" kind of thing is part of his personality, but neither his off-ice stuff nor his on-ice stuff helps mitigate the issues on the other side.

If you have a me first scorer who cherrypicks and celebrates, but is a good guy and gets along, it's an easier pill. The same works the other way if it's annoying personality that does all the grinding hard work and is a great glue guy when playing.

He'll do well in Carolina, but not as much upside due to Burns being there

Gostisbehere had 10 pts in 23 games after coming over. I’d expect similar production for DeAngelo behind Burns. Maybe around 40 pts.

NHL - "You can't trade that player back to Carolina, that's not legal!"
Also NHL - "Well you can do that".

I honestly think this is better for Philly. They can retain salary on another player and get real assets back.

It'll be super interesting to see where TonyD fits in.
    I don't think he's an everyday player.

    CAR returns two pairings:
    Slavin(LH)-Burns(RH)
    Skjei(LH)-Pesce(RH)

And they signed up Orlov for $7.75m, so he's in:
    Orlov(LH)-________

So their options for Orlov partner:
    a) Newly signed offensive-defenseman Tony DeAngelo ($1.6m)
    b) Last year's Hurricane's +/- leader Jalen Chatfield ($762k)
    c) Newly signed 7th D (at the time) Dylan Coughlan ($850k)

Now - it may not be obvious - but I think Jalen Chatfield has become a very solid 3rd pairing D-man.
His shot differential (and +/-) last year with Calvin DeHaan were VERY good.

For those that follow deep hockey, Dylan Coughlan has some upside.

    If I'm the coach... it's Orlov-Chatfield first.
[and Rod the Bod had Chatfield in for 78gp last year... and Rod is a grinder, so he appreciates a goal against vs. goal for kind of metric.]
Chatfield will at least stay home and let Orlov do his thing.
(And we know TonyD has had run-ins with Russians in the past... and Orlov is one that wasn't in the previous TonyD Hurricane lockerroom).

Point here: I'm not sure TonyD is an everyday fit in the new CAR D line-up.
I'm really curious to see how he's used... and how people forecast he'll be used. (looking at your Dobber - good luck!)

[Dobber's already missed a TonyD prediction from a few years ago... so we'll see how he does.)
^ps. This is a fun, fun thread from January 2021 post-TonyD RangerRoom tirade. Good opinion & forecasting thread. Some were right. Some were wrong.

Clearly Carolina management (and potentially Brind'Amour) like something about him or they wouldn't keep bringing him back.

Slavin had easily his best season paired with DeAgelo. I’d expect that pairing to be reunited.

Well... a team *could* do what's best for individual players.
    What happens with Burns then?
    Burns isn't exactly a strong two-way defenseman.
He needs a stay-at-home partner (which was Ferraro in SJ).
And a team wants their top defensemen to play big minutes.

So... what's a Slavin-DeAngelo pairing getting in minutes?
And then... who is Burns pairing with and how many minutes are they getting?

You are entertaining half-a-plan which involves busting up one of Carolina's top two pairings!
So - let's hear the rest.
