    ^That's fair... and possible.
    Not listing Chatfield though... IDK.

I interpret this signing to mean Carolina feels they are likely out on Erik Karlsson. Cant have another defensive liability RD right? haha

If nothing else, Carolina is so solid defensively overall that they can get away with the offensive upside that TDA brings to improve their overall puck movement. Similar to Toronto signing Klingberg in many ways.

We'll see if they trade or extend Pesce now.

Carolina is able to sacrifice defensive woes from their defensemen because of their system, and because of Slavin/Skjei/Pesce taking defensive responsibilities.

I also would think this was the backup move to Karlsson. I think every team is operating under "we'll take Karlsson off your hands, with maybe a small return" and SJS wants a legit return. So Leafs pivoted to Klingberg when they knew they weren't realistically getting him. This is Carolina realizing that now.

I also wonder if this is setting up a Pesce trade. This moves TDA up to RHD2, opens up for Chatfield, then takes them to 7D and not 8D on their NHL roster.

    re: Karlsson.
    Oh, yeah, Carolina is OUT.

Twitter has Karlsson to PIT sounding like its a done-deal.
But PIT has to wait out a Drew O'Connor RFA-arb signing/decision... they'll probably let it go to decision.
This also buys them time to work out the fine details of a trade and consider other UFAs.

So they've got until Aug.4 for the DoC arb-date.
    Aug.7 is 3 days after.
Aug.7-9 they buyout Granlund and check their cap situ.
Then they can trade for Karlsson and put the __% retained to SJ to make their cap fit *mwah* perfectly *mwah*.

It's also possible that Drew O'Connor is heading the other way and SJ wants to "see that number".
[Probably Ty Smith and/or Owen Pickering heading to SJ ++++.]
But - either way - works for both teams to wait as long as possible... which they can do with the DoC Arb date.

This makes sense and I hope it is true. I've been hoping to sell high on EK in my keeper league but man he could put up 100 points again in Pittsburgh.....maybe

Chatfield is too good to not play. Pesce could be the odd man out trade wise. That’s a deep D core and they can deal from their strength for sure.
