NHL finalizes salary cap for 23/24 season

NHL salary cap officially set at $83.5M. Floor is $61.7. Maximum salary is…$16.7M

Was hoping it would be a tad higher this year for us in cap leagues but it is what it is. Not sure I have ever seen them share the maximum salary number before. I didn't even know there was a max salary allowed.

It's also pretty high at 20%. The closest anyone has ever been was McDavid at 16.7% ($12.5m when the cap was $75m in 2017). Then MacKinnon is 2nd at 15.3% with his latest deal. It is weird though, the percentages are for when the contract is signed, not for the yr they are active. AKA, McDavid signed in 2017, but his $12.5m cap hit didn't start till 2018. So his 16.7% was against the 2017-18 cap of $75m, but it was active for the 2018-19 cap of $79.5m so it would actually be a cap percentage of 15.7%.

I would say the sweet spot for pay raises seems to be 13-15% right now. Which would be $10.855-$12.525 (12.7m would be 15.21% of the cap) in 2023-24.

2024-25 it's rumoured to raise to 87.5m. So 20% max would be $17.5m. 13-15% would be $11.375-$13.125m.

There are max salaries in other sports:
NBA - The NBA has a bunch of different rules for rookies, developed players, new vets on your team and so on. But basically, a player who's coming off of their "rookie deals" can sign for max 25% of the cap, unless you qualify for the Derrick Rose Rule which bumps you to 30%. If you are eligible for the "Super Max Deal", you can re-sign for 35% of the cap. If you qualify for the "Designated Vet Player exception" you can sign for a max of 35% but also an 8% escalation in the subsequent years.

MLB - No limits on a contract extension

NFL - There are no limits on the length, but the future years of a deal must fall within the cap. So in the NHL, you can be under the cap in 2023-24 season, but be over the cap in 2024-25. NFL you can't have that.
