Yes, but not in hockey, and not a league where we used actual player salaries, but rather it converted to an auction cap league. It worked fine. This may not be what you are wondering about, but if it is, I can give more details.

The only suggestion I can give you then is to see what every team's cap would be right now and see what totals you come up with. That should give you an idea. If you haven't played in cap leagues before, make sure that you are not too close to the NHL cap.

    Good luck

The size of the league should definitely affect what your salary cap will be. If you have a 12 team league and use the NHL salary cap, a lot of the star players will remain as free agents. But it's your league and anything can be done as long as it makes it enjoyable for the GMs in the league.

    To OP's question: No.
That would be a tough transition because some teams are currently holding "good cap hit" players and other teams may be holding solid players but at "albatross" contracts.

    Personally, I don't like it.
It's very unbalanced/unfair proposal in an existing league.
Some teams are REALLY going to improve in "value" and others will really decrease.

Like... whoever is holding Leon Draisaitl (at $8.5m)... great deal.
Or even Matthew Tkachuk. Especially Tage Thompson ($7.1m).

But if you are holding Nathan MacKinnon (about to move to $12.5m)... that's a great player... but not necessarily a cap-league gem of a contract.

A quick way to set a cap number:
*Have somebody make spreadsheet with ALL the "on-counting roster" value of all the league's current contracts.
*Multiply that by 1.10 (cushion), divide that by the number of teams (say, 12)... and that's your Maximum Cap per team.
*Each year, adjust it in some form tied to the NHL cap.

In a 24-team, 25 player league I'm in, we use $100m... only because that represens exactly 25 players at $4.000m average cost.
That's a nice number for a 600 counting player league.

If you have less counting players... say 300... then you might want a $6.000m average cost number.
You'll know when you do the first exercise.

    Whatever you do...
    1. Decide now
    2. Implement it NEXT summer.

Give teams a whole year to "trade" knowing what they are targetting.
To consider switching THIS summer is grossly unfair to some teams/GMs.

For an existing dynasty league to make a change like this it needs to be announced probably 2 seasons out. Let everyone know it’s coming. Add salaries to your league but no cap so GMs can start to get an idea of what it’ll look like. Then add the hard cap in a few years. That’s really the only way to make it work.

Id just do a whole league reset if you plan on changing the rules this dramatically.

If the league is stale-ish, shaking it up may be necessary to keep interest high in the league. The better managers are more likely to win regardless of the reset.

If the league is humming along then switching formats may not be the way to go.
