Yup, and technically they can't talk extension until then. But we all know that happens prior.

If a player is traded tho, I think he can't talk extension until post trade deadline (Erik Karlsson). He was traded Sept 2018 with his deal expiring July 1st 2019. He wasn't allowed to extend with the new team until March 2019 if the extension is an 8yr deal. Same went with Mark Stone.

But if you aren't signing a max yr deal (8), and are traded, you can sign whenever (Nick Jensen was traded Feb 2019, but signed a 4yr extension with his new team instantly).

Thanks Axe... you are right - they are bringing start of season (UFA day) back to July 1 this year.
I thought the NHL had perma-shifted it to occur later than July 1st (maybe to give players the Canada Day off... NHLPA???)...
...but that was just a COVID shift, apparently (2020, 21, 22).

That'll be huge/interesting day for TOR-GM (Treliving?) and fans.
If July 2nd rolls in without an extension for Matthews and/or Nylander... it'll be fun/nerve-racking/something.

Matthews, per capfriendly, has a NMC kicking in for 23-24 season.
So... could we... possibly... be looking at a Weber/Subban or Hall/Larsson sort of end-of-summer blockbuster!?!

Just hope Treleving doesn’t have to come out and say “the trade is one for one”…

    re: Dubas.
GMs usually have an inkling towards their player's happiness and desire to stay long-term.
So... one has to wonder what Dubas (& Shanahan) knew about the long-term re-signing prospects of Matthews, Nylander... Marner.

I mean... if you are Dubas... and you know one/some/all of these guys aren't coming back...
Do you want to even stay for that criticism?

If you are Shanahan... and know that those re-signings might not happen... you'd look like a fool to keep your GM... right?

So... then... you BOTH need to come up with some excuse yada-yada for things not continuing - without tipping the situation to fans.

*Some downside speculation for Leaf fans. It's possible... right? And neither can say/suggest that the parting is because it had to be done or BOTH look foolish for not being able to re-sign key players.*

    re: Treliving.
What do we know about his most recent GM-ing??? From last summer...
    Makes sense as "the guy"...

Ya that's why I was hammering the dates for the Leafs. The draft is June 26th. So Treliving has like 3.5 weeks to evaluate the roster and have the strong idea what he wants by then, cause you know the other GMs are going to calling him and circling.

Part of the agreement Calgary had with Toronto to allow Toronto to talk to him was not allowing him to work the draft this yr.

Maybe part of the delay was working on language on what Treliving can do at the draft?

I wonder if it will include a clause similar to this:

Treliving is not allowed to produce any such list pertaining to any order of any potential draft prospects.

And if any such lists have been or are created, he is not allowed to throw them in the garbage bin in his office, and accidentally miss the garbage, thus allowing another member of the management team to stumble across.

I think Shanny's intentions is to keep the core 4.
Dubas likely already knows Matthews (or others) asking price will be much higher than he is willing to pay.
Dubas not wanting to be a part of this direction - exits.

Players all stay in Toronto - on overpaid deals.

Cap is supposed to start rising again next off season so I am sure that is in their minds too but yes, it's going to be interesting.

A restriction on Treliving is he can't be on the draft floor this yr. I guess this creates a paper trail if he breaks any other restrictions.

I wonder if he can still operate trades and what not via phone, and this is just a restriction that creates a hurdle and makes things a little harder for the Leafs and that's the only reason for it.
