Nope. I’m wrong and you are correct. 13-14 was the switch to this crap format and the betting has really been in the last 3 years or so. But I’d guess the gambling further reinforces the format. The NHL wanted so badly to have a March madness style playoffs to increase interest and ease of understanding.

Tied to gambling with Stanley Cup futures bets.
You can see a path to the cup and which team has an easier path. This yrs "easiest path" was Edmonton/Vegas. You can go through and go "Ok one of Edmonton and Vegas likely makes the Semis and at that point it's a 50/50". You could also argue Colorado had the same type of path.
I'd say you rather have activity in betting on a game per game stance, or series by series though and avoid pushing future bets as knowing the path probably doesn't change the amount bet on those. If someone is making a Stanley Cup winner bet, they aren't doing it based on the bracket.

I don’t really understand the argument for switching to re-seeding in a season where the 16th best regular season team is absolutely dominating and has eliminated the 1st, 2nd and 4th best record teams en route to the final. And will likely face and destroy the 5th best record team in the final.
If you made the change to reseeding, Toronto fans would have been complaining in round 2 when they got bounced by the Devils instead of the Panthers. “Oh I miss the divisional format where we would have played and beat the Panthers”.
With so little separation between most teams these days, the only argument I can see for reseeding based on competitiveness is 1-16 and from a logistical standpoint (travel, etc) it really doesn’t make sense to go that route. The system we have isn’t perfect, but there really isn’t a perfect system.
Now all of that being said, I do personally prefer the 1-8 to the current setup (especially with the wild cards), but I just don’t know that the arguments for switching to it make sense this year.
Without me, it's only "aweso".
Well now
