Question Which Prospects to Cut From Farm Team? REP Given to All!

    Hey All,

I've got a Points Only (Goals & Assists) Keep 8 (Plus 30 Minors) league with a handful of young bucks I'll have to drop before the draft next season. We start 9F, 4D & 2 G (Goalies get points for wins & shutouts). I've compiled a bunch of high prospect-draft picks, so I'll likely end up with about 7-8 first rounders from the 2023 NHL draft (of the top 32 actual NHL picks). That means I'll have to drop that many of my current 30 prospects to make room for them.

My 8 Keepers are: Batherson, Boldy, Hintz, Keller, Nylander, Dahlin, Oettinger, then either Kakko or Korpisalo (or an off-season trade). It's a young core and I have a fairly good set of picks for next season, so looking to compete.

Prospects can be kept in the farm team until 105GP (85GP for goalies). Once dropped, they cannot be picked up as a FA if they've never player an NHL game. They can be picked up mid-season as long as they've ever played a game in the NHL.

Here are the ones I'm sure I'll keep:
    F - W. Eklund, C. Geekie, D. Guenther, W. Johnston, V. Kravstov, R. McGroarty, M. Phillips, M. Savoie, S. Wright
    D - K. Korchinski, N. Lundkvist, J. Sanderson

Here are the ones I will need to cut EIGHT from:
    F - A. Beckman, B. Brisson, T. Foerster, F. Pinelli, R. Schaefer, C. Stillman, A. Thomas
    D - L. Bichsel, A. Honka, Z. Jones, M. Lamoureux, V. Soderstrom, C. Timmins
    G - L. Parik, C. Primeau, F. Sandstrom

I don't know most of these prospects enough to confidently make the cuts need. No need to rank them, but which eight would you cut from the list? (OR tell me which ones from the list you'd definitely want to keep.) Thanks! REP left everywhere I can.

Thanks! I know Kravstov used to be held in high regard. Has that ship sort of sailed at this point?

Others may see untapped potential, but to me he seems like the kind of guy who was drafted high mainly because he was big and he's a constant threat to take off to Russia. A big guy who doesn't flash skill is destined for lower-6 duty or worse. Tage Thompson does remind us that big guys sometimes take a long-ass time to get it together, but I think you go broke betting on huge guys and holding them for 6-7 years hoping they repeat Tage's emergence. Kravtsov's best scoring year, in any league at any level, was 3 years ago when he scored 24 points in 49 games in the KHL. This was after he ran away from the Rangers' AHL affiliate and scrambled home.

So you have a 23 year old who has never done anything on any level of note, but happens to be 6'3". What is that worth?

I hung on to Kravstov for a few years. However, I certainly didn't like the way things were going and I was able to move him as part of a bigger trade. I don't regret that. At best you put him on a short leash and see what happens the rest of the year in Van City. If it's more of the same, which I'm thinking is likely, it's time to cut bait IMO.

I would NOT cut Sandstrom, Primeau, Foerstster, or Brisson. The rest I’d be comfortable cutting.
12 teams. Keep 9 any position.
7 prospects. D scoring 3.75 for goal, 2.75 for assist. Forwards 3.5 for goal, 2.5 for assist. 0.5 for hits and blocks. Goalie scoring -1.5 GA, 0.3 for save, 2 points for win and extra 2 for shutout.

    Pre Draft

F: Keller, Zegras, Suzuki, Caufield, Cozens

    D: Drysdale, Guhle, Perunovich

    G:

    IR:

Prospects: W. Johnston, K. Johnson, Guenther, Morrow, Mateychuk

I'd probably cut the 7 listed.
8th one is hard... I'm hedging towards Lamoureux. I think he'll be a fine 2nd pairing shutdown D-man, potentially.
But I don't think the offensive upside is there (by his Jr Numbers).

Hold Timmins - see if any TOR fans in your league have interest. I don't think he has big upside and see him as a "sell high" guy.

If PHI moves Carter Hart - there may be opportunity for Sandstrom - though it also means the team will be garbage.

I missed that you had Kravtsov. He's a hold for me for the rest of this year, unless he goes on heater, and you can deal him.

    Pengwin is mostly right, here.

There will be an opportunity for Sandstrom versus Ersson versus ??? as the backup even if they don't move Hart.

However, whether they move Hart or not, the team will be garbage for a while. It's hard to recover from a few years of dealing away picks to acquire qworse players and signing them to bad deals, especially if you have Delauriers with a NTC for 3 more years.
