Because Chuck Fletcher is on the other end. If they only had a gritty veteran to trade to send back, maybe Fletcher throws in somebody good who isn't a Fletcher guy.

This is what happens when you wait until literally the last minute to do a deal of this magnitude. Fletcher is to blame but Yzerman holds blame here too. If he was truly interested in JVR, and needed to clear cap to get him, you can't start that process at the last minute. If he wanted him, you have to know this before the last minute and be better prepared. Blame goes all around for me.
